The road to the 20th annual Fantastic Fest is at its end, but we’re excited to partner with the annual genre event for one more suitably epic sneak peek before the festivities begin in Austin tomorrow. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview series during our own 20th anniversary on the internet, we can exclusively share a new look at the hotly anticipated Finnish action sequel Sisu: Road to Revenge, which is set to debut at the festival this Sunday, September 21. The image shows returning star Jorma Tommila, covered in grime and ready to wreak more havoc upon the soldiers who wronged him while dual-wielding machine guns. In the dimly lit hallway, he has the look of an unstoppable spirit of vengeance, ready to deliver more entertaining carnage and death.
Released in 2022, the original Sisu became a surprising breakout hit for its deliciously gory and stylish violence against Nazis with a show, don’t tell approach to storytelling. It took place during the waning days of World War II amid the Lapland War between Finland and Germany, as the legendary one-man death squad turned prospector Aatami Korpi (Tommila) made a Waffen-SS unit pay brutally for trying to rob him of his gold and murder him. Road to Revenge, however, will feature a more personal story surrounding the wall-to-wall action and will pit Aatami against the Soviets. In 1946, the “man who refuses to die” returns to his old family home in Soviet-occupied Karelia, where his loved ones were brutally murdered at the height of the war. Determined to find a safe haven to rebuild it in their honor, he dismantles the house and loads the pieces into a truck for a cross-country journey. That trip takes a turn, however, when the Red Army commander who slaughtered his family returns to finish what he started.
After the success of the first film, Tommila will get to share the screen with a big-name star as the villainous officer Igor Dragonov — Stephen Lang. Known for playing the big bad of James Cameron‘s Avatar franchise, Miles Quaritch, Lang has shown he can bring an intimidating and powerful presence on-screen, also prominently starring as the blind and dangerous war veteran Norman Nordstrom in Don’t Breathe. He’ll add an extra sense of danger to the chase after Aatami, culminating in a fight to the death between the two men, packed with inventive action setpieces to make the most of the increased $12.2 million budget.
‘Sisu: Road to Revenge’ Brings Back the Man Behind the Carnage
Joining Tommila and Lang is veteran actor Richard Brake of Game of Thrones, Barbarian, Doom, and, more recently, Mayor of Kingstown fame. Behind the camera as writer and director, meanwhile, will once again be Jalmari Helander. He helped steer the original Sisu to acclaim with both critics and audiences, earning a Certified Fresh 94% from the former and an 88% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes and scoring a Saturn Award for Best International Feature. The success also landed him a job directing an 80s action icon, as it was announced earlier this year that Helander would be helming a Rambo prequel starring Noah Centineo. With the wind at his back and some extra star power, he’ll look to deliver a sequel that takes “The Immortal” to bigger, more bombastic places for action fans.
Sisu: Road to Revenge will world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 21 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas, as part of a stacked lineup of genre fare that can be found on the event’s official website. Afterwards, it’ll storm into theaters in Finland on October 22 before arriving in the U.S. on November 21 courtesy of Screen Gems.
