Jason Thompson explains Billy’s grand plan on The Young and the Restless
Billy Abbott’s goal on The Young and the Restless is to regain control of Chancellor from the Newmans.
Jason Thompson told Soap Opera Digest, “As much as he’s tried, he cannot put that to rest. He wants to do it for many reasons. Not only to run that company, but also to prove to his mother that he is capable, prove to his mother that he can be just as devious as every other businessperson in the city… He wants his piece, and he believes that’s Chancellor.”
Billy has aligned with Cane Ashby, who returned to Genoa City with substantial wealth, to achieve this aim. Thompson explained, “Right now, Cane has a lot of power… to basically wipe everyone out and have total control of the city.” Despite the partnership, Billy also seeks to protect Jabot from Cane’s acquisitions, saying, “He’s trying to play both sides here… and also keep Jack somewhat on the line for Abbott Communications because he wants to do right by Sally.”
Thompson noted that Billy’s trust shifts frequently. “It changes almost on the daily who he feels he can trust. One day it’s Cane, one day it’s Jack, one day Sally… they’re all trying to outmaneuver each other.” Billy’s history with the Newmans adds complexity; regarding Nick, Thompson said, “I’m not sure that Billy has a ton of respect for Nick… he has no problem getting in his face if that’s what needs to happen in the moment.”
Billy’s loyalty lies mainly with himself, the Abbott family, and those he feels emotionally tied to, such as Sally. Thompson added, “I think ultimately he really does know that he can trust Jack… but he quickly learns that he can’t trust Cane or anyone else that Cane’s working with.”
