‘Twisted Metal’ Season 2 Will Be Just as Bonkers as Season 1, According to New Update

Hang onto your seats! Twisted Metal will return to Peacock at the end of this month, with Anthony Mackie’s hit action series premiering the first three episodes of its second season on July 31. Ahead of Twisted Metal Season 2, Peacock has released another trailer highlighting just how unhinged things are about to become in this post-apocalyptic world for Mackie’s John Doe. Season 1 was a brilliant hit with both critics and audiences alike, as represented in the scores on the aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes. There, the action series came in at 67% with critics and 93% with audiences. Now, ahead of Season 2, it has been revealed how the beginning of Season 2’s story will play out.

The series is based on the Twisted Metal video game franchise, and it looks poised to deliver on all the mayhem and violence for which the games were loved. While the first season functioned primarily as a world-building and character introduction phase, its season finale set up the tournament for which the games are famous for. Logically speaking, Twisted Metal Season 2 will launch into the tournament proper with Mackie’s John Doe at the forefront. Asked about any updates regarding the coming season, TVLine reveals how the sophomore season intends to open its run, saying:

“The new season (premiering July 31 on Peacock) opens with an ultimately unsettling flashback to 1998, that lays out a backstory for the real Raven, who is played with a vicious zeal by ‘She-Hulk’ scene stealer Patty Guggenheim. (Turns out Neve Campbell’s Season 1 character is but one of many “Raven” minions under the OG’s leadership.) Also, if you’re a fan of the Baby-Sitters Club novels, you’re in for quite a treat.”

Season 1 of the series was released via the binge model, but Peacock has opted for a weekly release this time around, highlighting faith in the Mackie-led series. Season 2 will follow John Doe (Mackie) and Quiet (played by Brooklyn Nine-Nine veteranStephanie Beatriz) in the deadly Twisted Metal tournament, hosted by the powerful, dangerous, and unpredictable Calypso (Anthony Carrigan). John and Quiet will have to find a way to survive an onslaught of enemies, one of whom will include the murderous clown Sweet Tooth, who is physically portrayed by former wrestling star Samoa Joe and voiced by Will Arnett. As though the Twisted Metal tournament isn’t unhinged enough, John runs into his estranged sister, Dollface (Tania Okoye), during the tournament. It’s hard to expect a happy family reunion as her motivations towards him are unknown.

Based on Sony’s aforementioned video game franchise, Twisted Metal was developed as a series by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Michael Jonathan Smith. Whether the series continues beyond Season 2 remains to be seen as Peacock has not made any decision public yet. However, the decision to move away from the binge model suggests that, should Season 2 perform, the streamer will be more than willing to go for a third installment.

The first three episodes of Twisted Metal Season premiere on Peacock later this month on July 31. Check out the new trailer above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
