Time Is Running Out to See ‘Weapons’ Director’s First Horror Movie

Among the film genres, horror is the most diverse, from psychological to body horror, supernatural entities to creature features, and unseen foes to plain human cruelty – it never ceases to find ways to send chills down the viewer’s spine. Most stories are straightforward and some include a plot twist, but we typically see the fear and terror of the situation through the eyes of the victims. Then there are a few horror stories that flip the narrative so well that you don’t know where the truck (or ghost) came from. Weapons director Zach Cregger’s Barbarian falls into the latter category, and you have little time left to watch it.

Horror fans have until September 1 to watch Barbarian on Netflix. Currently, Cregger is riding high on the success of his latest film, Weapons, starring Julia Garner, which again flips the narrative brilliantly and has a strong hold at the box office. But Barbarian, his first film, was a sleeper hit and equally vicious. Starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long, the film lures the viewers in with a false sense of security, where audiences think they know what’s coming, and then subverts their expectations.

While it wasn’t a big hit, it was very profitable, earning $45 million worldwide against a budget of about $4 million. It is also on its way to garnering cult-classic status for Cregger’s vision, performances by the cast, and a thrilling story. Barbarian follows Tess, a woman who finds out that the rental home she reserved has been double-booked by a man. While she shares the space with the suspicious stranger, she’s always on guard, and the two soon find dark secrets buried within the home. The movie has a 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating owing to its dark humor and plenty of jump scares.

‘Weapons’ Is as Good as ‘Barbarian’

As opposed to the sleeper hit that Barbarian was, Weapons is a breakout success for Cregger. The movie follows a schoolteacher, Justine, who is investigating the missing case of 17 children from her class, as a community is left questioning what’s behind these disappearances. The movie has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating and has far surpassed the $150 million mark worldwide. Weapons also stars Josh Brolin, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, and more.
