The Summer I Turned Pretty has certainly made some significant changes from the Jenny Han trilogy on which it’s based, but the core details of the series have thankfully stayed the same. As such, Season 3, Episode 3, “Last Supper” sees Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) getting ready to announce their engagement to their parents. Belly tells Taylor (Rain Spencer) first, and Taylor expresses some major concerns in a surprising and refreshing moment, as she points out that Belly just found out that Jeremiah cheated on her. Still, though, Taylor ultimately comes around and supports Belly, which she’s definitely going to need, after Laurel’s (Jackie Chung) livid reaction.
“Last Supper” is mostly a transitional episode that sets everything in motion for the upcoming summer in Cousins Beach. Steven (Sean Kaufman) is still recovering from his car accident, and Laurel is hovering due to a combination of fear for him and guilt for not being there for him and Belly. Because of this, she pushes John (Colin Ferguson) away, and he ends up missing the dedication ceremony for Susannah’s (Rachel Blanchard) garden. The whole episode builds up to the ceremony and the lunch that follows, which are both the most memorable and compelling parts of the installment.
‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3, Episode 3 Sets Up the Events of the Summer
The main focus of “Last Supper” is the upcoming dedication ceremony, but the moments leading up to it pave the way for the main events of the season. Taylor is still upset after Steven said that they shouldn’t be together, but she tries to make things work after her mother, Lucinda (Kristen Connolly), encourages her to fight for Steven. Steven can’t read Taylor’s mind, though, so they continue to tiptoe around each other without talking things through. Later, Lucinda tries to play matchmaker by asking Steven to look through the finances for her salon, but he then learns that the salon is really struggling to make money. Taylor agrees to help before she leaves for New York for the summer, and it seems as though Steven will end up helping more as well. In the meantime, Steven’s car accident in the Season 3 premiere has made him determined to prioritize work over romance, so he tries to keep up with his workload for Adam’s (Tom Everett Scott) company, even while essentially on bed rest.
Meanwhile, Conrad (Christopher Briney) feels a little lost after losing his summer job, but he’s considering taking a position working in a lab instead. Conrad still intends on skipping the dedication ceremony so he doesn’t have to see Belly, but Agnes (Zoé De Grand Maison) convinces Conrad to face his fears instead of avoiding them. The Fishers and Conklins then get ready to attend Susannah’s dedication ceremony. Even though John won’t be there, Belly and Jeremiah still plan on telling their families when they all get together for the ceremony. Laurel’s main focus is just on honoring Susannah’s memory, which she and Belly do by picking out photos for Susannah’s remembrance board. While doing so, Laurel tells Belly how proud Susannah would be of her, and Belly continues to stay quiet about the wedding.
Belly and Conrad Reunite for the First Time Since Christmas
After Jeremiah gives his speech at the ceremony, Belly notices that Conrad has shown up after all. Belly is in the middle of a conversation with Jeremiah when she first sees Conrad, but she freezes when she notices that he’s there. Conrad greets everybody, then he and Belly have a sweet but awkward reunion. It’s the first time that they’ve seen each other since Christmas, although both of them continue to keep the secret that they spent the holiday in Cousins together.
Conrad is put in a very tough spot, as it’s been made clear from his conversations with Agnes that he still has feelings for Belly. Belly and Jeremiah continue to act very coupley in front of Conrad, but he puts on a brave face despite it all, even though he’s back with the whole extended family for the first time in two years. Things are even distant between him and Steven, although the two soon find their footing again. Everyone is generally happy to see Conrad, although Adam uses his presence as an opportunity to pit him and Jeremiah against each other.
Belly and Jeremiah Share the News of Their Engagement
Belly and Jeremiah initially decide to wait to tell everyone about the engagement after seeing Conrad. At lunch, though, Laurel and Adam take the chance to toast their kids and their future. When it’s Jeremiah’s turn, Adam gives him grief for having to spend another semester at Finch. Worried about Jeremiah’s feelings, Belly steps in and announces that Jeremiah does have plans for his future – with her. Belly tells everyone about her and Jeremiah’s engagement, and it goes about as well as could be expected. Laurel is absolutely furious, while Adam and Steven call out the ridiculousness of the situation. Conrad just sits there, utterly heartbroken and unable to say anything. He’s the only one who doesn’t speak out against the engagement, and he only talks in response to Steven, who asks him if he knew about the engagement beforehand.
The engagement announcement absolutely ruins the very expensive lunch that Laurel has already agreed to pay for. She takes care of the check for the food but cancels both the lunch and the activities for the rest of the day. Instead of trying to work things out or explain themselves, Belly and Jeremiah storm out of the lunch, and then talk about their hopes that everyone will eventually come around. After that explosive lunch, the episode ends with a devastated Conrad standing outside the restaurant by himself. Now that Laurel and Belly are officially fighting, The Summer I Turned Pretty has perfectly set up Belly’s summer away from her in Cousins, where she will be sharing the house with Conrad as she plans her wedding to Jeremiah.
