The Housemaidhas finally been released in theaters, and the director, Paul Feig and star Sydney Sweeney are already thinking about a sequel.
The Housemaid is a thriller drama that features Sweeney as the film’s protagonist, Millie, a woman who is on parole after serving 10 years in prison. She gets hired as a live-in housekeeper by Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried), a housewife, her daughter Cece (Indiana Elle), and her wealthy husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar). At first glance, the Winchesters’ and her new job appear to be perfect. However, as the story unfolds, Millie finds herself in a deadly situation.
The film is based on a book of the same name. It is the first of a three-part series by author Freida McFadden. Now, following the surprisingly high reviews the movie received just days after its release, Feige and Sweeney are already hoping for a sequel.
In an interview with TODAY, Feig stated that Sweeney’s character’s story isn’t over yet. “Millie is not done,” he told the publication. The director also expressed a desire to adapt the remaining two books of the series. The second book is titled The Housemaid’s Secret, and it revolves around the new family that Millie works for. The final book of the trilogy is titled The Housemaid is Watching. It follows Millie’s new life as a social worker.
Sweeney told TODAY that the ending of the film gives audiences a good idea of what a potential sequel could be about. She also believes that the movie makes it pretty clear what Millie will do next. “We kind of get a taste of where Millie goes and what’s going on,” said the actor. She added that she hoped Seyfried’s character, Nina, would return, too, because she feels like Millie needs her. “I want Nina to come back into her life. I feel like Millie really needs Nina,” she explained.
Although The Housemaid only came out two days ago at the time of this article’s publication, it’s already received a ton of praise from critics and casual viewers. While it’ll take a while before anyone can get an accurate reading of how the film will actually perform, the current reviews are a good sign and could be enough to warrant a sequel.
The Housemaid is playing in theaters now.
