Though the twists and turns on the road to discovering the identity of ‘H’ were plentiful, it simply doesn’t compare to the rollercoaster of ups and downs following Line of Duty‘s supposed final season. Jed Mercurio‘s beloved crime series following a special group tasked with exposing corruption within the police force kept viewers gripped for almost a decade, and it has now been confirmed that, after three years of speculation, the hunt for crooked coppers isn’t done yet.
According to new reports, Line of Duty will officially return for a seventh season, with Martin Compston, Adrian Dunbar, and Vicky McClure all set to reprise their lead roles. “Line of Duty has been a job of a lifetime,” Compston said in a statement about the renewal, adding, “Not only in terms of the show’s success but the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with I now call some of my closest friends. I can’t wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together.” Filming on the next installment is scheduled for Spring 2026 and will take place in Belfast. After a controversial end to the sixth season, with many complaining about the finale, the Beeb and Mercurio will have a chance to rectify their decision as the series enters a new era. Speaking in a statement about the renewal, the creator and Bodyguard writer said:
“Everyone involved in Line of Duty feels enormous gratitude to the show’s fans. We’re privileged to have had so many of you follow the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn’t be more delighted to be returning for a seventh. Corruption in this country is supposed to have come to an end while Line of Duty was off air so I’ve been forced to use my imagination.”
What Is ‘Line of Duty’ Season 7 About?
Against the trend of shows keeping their synopsis cards close to their chests, the announcement of Line of Duty‘s return has come fitted with a detailed look at what is to come from the seventh season. “In series 7, AC-12 has been disbanded and rebranded the Inspectorate of Police Standards. Anticorruption work has never been more difficult and in this challenging climate Steve Arnott (Compston), Kate Fleming (McClure) and Ted Hastings (Dunbar) are assigned their most sensitive case so far,” the synopsis reads, continuing, “Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, a charismatic officer winning plaudits for a string of takedowns of organised crime, is accused of abusing his position of trust to act as a sexual predator. But is Gough’s case a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows?”
