Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ five-year mission is coming to an end. In advance of the release of its third season next month, Paramount has announced that their flagshipStar Trek series has been renewed for its fifth and final season. The series’ fourth season is currently in production, and the fifth season will begin production later this year. The five-season order fits the pattern established by two of Paramount+’s previous Star Trek series: both Discovery and Lower Decks have concluded with their own fifth seasons.
In a statement, executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman thanked Paramount for giving them the chance to explore the worlds of Star Trek, and to the fans for their support: “From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible. We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — THANK YOU. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.” Fans don’t have long to wait for the show’s next season: the third season will premiere on Paramount+ with two episodes on July 17.
What Is ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ About?
Taking place a few years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, Strange New Worlds centers around the Federation starship USS Enterprise, which is captained by Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). His crew includes Una Chin-Riley, alias Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Spock (Ethan Peck), Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), La’An Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), and Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), plus Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (Martin Quinn), a new addition for season three. Together, they explore the galaxy and promote the Federation’s message of peaceful discovery. Longtime fans will know that Pike’s fate is ultimately sealed, and that the Enterprise‘s captaincy will eventually pass to James T. Kirk (played on Strange New Worlds by Paul Wesley), but the Strange New Worlds crew have three more seasons to explore.
With Strange New Worlds ending, there’s only one other ongoing Star Trek series: franchise freshman Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which recently wrapped filming its first season. Only time will tell if any future series will be commissioned to join it.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fifth and final season, which will begin production later this year. The third season of Strange New Worlds will premiere on July 17, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
