The latest comments about the DC Universe‘s Wonder Woman suggest we may be closer than ever to seeing history made for the third time with the iconic superhero role. Now David Corenswet has taken on the red cape and boots to play Superman for the DCU timeline, the prospect of who will play Batman and Wonder Woman seems a bigger matter than ever.
Though there are plenty of other major DC heroes in the franchise’s roster, Batman and Wonder Woman are colossally important roles, and castings that will no doubt come to define whether the DCU’s future sticks the landing. That said, one Wonder Woman casting has only seemed more and more possible for the DCU going forward.
The DCU’s Third Live-Action Wonder Woman Casting Seems Like It Could Be Closer Than Ever
Ever since it became clear the DCU would be recasting the majority of its main heroes, Alexandra Daddario has been a frontrunner for the role of the franchise’s Wonder Woman. This concept is a big deal by itself, but is particularly potent to note given this would make Daddario the third-ever live-action Wonder Woman to appear in an officially released project were it to become reality.
Recent history has further solidified the idea that Daddario could follow along the same lines as David Corenswet in terms of being a first-pick DCU fancasting who eventually gets to actually take on the role.
Perhaps the most promising tease of this idea has been the actor’s latest comments about being the DCU’s Wonder Woman. In an interview with Screen Rant’s own Grant Hermanns, Alexandra Daddario stated she’d love the chance to take on the role, commenting that “working with James Gunn would be amazing in any capacity.”
The update that Alexandra Daddario would still very much be open to being in the DCU and taking on the Wonder Woman mantle certainly makes this prospect seem all the more likely. With the DCU timeline starting to now kick off in earnest, too, it seems there can’t be a huge number of days left until we see this third Wonder Woman casting.
Why Wonder Woman Has So Few Released Live-Action Appearances
Given Wonder Woman is widely considered to be a part of DC’s big “trinity” – consisting of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman – it can be surprising to note that the character has had a far lower number of live-action movie and television appearances compared to her counterparts.
However, this is in no small part the result of several releases that were intended to feature a live-action Wonder Woman either not making it through the production process, or not being officially broadcast. From 1967 to 2013, four separate plans for live-action Wonder Woman shows fell into these categories, keeping the list of officially released live-action Wonder Woman appearances low.
Hopefully, the DC Universe‘s upcoming version of Wonder Woman can help further prove the potential of bringing the Amazonian princess to life in live-action, and potentially change the game permanently for a character who is often criminally underappreciated in this specific realm – whether Diana is played by Alexandra Daddario or not.
