Sydney Sweeney’s 131-Minute Thriller Breaks Into New Box Office List

After the unquestionable disappointment of her boxing biopic, Christy, which earned just $2 million worldwide from a reported budget of $15 million, Sydney Sweeney returned to the box office with a bang courtesy of an adaptation of The Housemaid, the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden. On its recent fifth weekend at the box office, The Housemaid continued its impressive run by finishing inside the top four domestically once again, adding another $8.5 million to its total, which now stands at an impressive $245.7 million.

This $245.7 million global haul is enough to help The Housemaid reach one of its most impressive milestones yet. Officially, the film is now one of the 40 highest-grossing thrillers of all-timeworldwide, overtaking the likes of 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and David Leitch’s Bullet Train. The film to lose its place in the list, thanks to The Housemaid‘s continued success, is another 2025 release: Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Starring Sweeney alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, The Housemaid is a violent erotic thriller packed with twists and turns. Critics may have proven more skeptical about this adaptation, but audiences have and continue to love it, awarding a near-perfect 92% approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. A synopsis reads:

“From director Paul Feig, the film plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous — a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.”

What is the Highest-Grossing Thriller of All Time?

The Housemaid might be in the top 40, but what is the highest-grossing thriller of all time? Interestingly, only one movie under this genre banner has ever broken the billion-dollar boundary. Released in 2019, the all-conquering Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix earned an enormous $1.078 billion at the box office. This is over $250 million more than the second-placed Inception, the mind-bending Christopher Nolan sci-fi flick that earned $826 million worldwide back in 2010.

The Housemaid is available to watch in theaters now. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more box office updates.
