DC’s delightfully bizarre and whimsical Black Label Superman series has finally reached its conclusion, and with it comes one of the most absurd updates to Lois Lane and Clark Kent’s relationship. Believe us, this may be the most unexpected and weirdest thing the comic publisher has ever done to this iconic couple.
Lois Lane Just Became Clark Kent’s Mother in Weird Lore Twist (Seriously)
Comic Pages Come From W. Maxwell Prince’s Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #5 (2025) – Art by Martín Morazzo
W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, and Chris O’Halloran conclude their exceptional Black Label series with Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #5. The final issue explores the aftermath of the Man of Steel’s brutal fight against Kryptonite Man, a battle that weakened Clark so severely that he ultimately contracted a common illness normally seen in children on Earth.
However, Superman’s unique immune system doesn’t respond to the illness like a common flu, but instead reacts as if it were stage four cancer. Clark’s exposure to the full Kryptonite spectrum leaves him critically vulnerable, allowing a child’s virus to overwhelm him. His older, alien antibodies fail to protect him adequately, leaving him with less than an hour to live.
Unsurprisingly, in Clark’s final minutes, Batman devises a desperate Hail Mary. Reasoning that children can sometimes survive viruses fatal to adults due to more efficient immune responses, Bruce loads his Kryptonite cannon with Speckled Kryptonite, a rare variant known to de-age Superman.
Bruce then blasts Superman with the Speckled Kryptonite, and the story abruptly shifts to Lois Lane calmly going through her morning routine, including preparing a baby bottle. It’s here that the realization sets in: Bruce has regressed Superman to infancy to trigger a proper immune response, and Lois, with help from the superhero community, is now raising Clark as a literal baby.
This marks an exceptionally bizarre and unexpected twist on the Lois and Clark relationship. Instead of being his lover, girlfriend, or wife, as is typical in DC narratives, Lois has assumed the role of mother in a very literal sense. The issue also implies that this regression isn’t temporary, effectively making Lois Lane Superman’s mom.
What makes this revelation even more wild is that The Kryptonite Spectrum includes a subplot centered on Lois and Clark breaking up because an aging Lois wants a husband and a baby, something Superman can’t provide. Yet, in a bizarre twist of fate, Superman’s baby-wanting ex-girlfriend ultimately becomes his mother instead.
