Superman will fly into theaters next month on July 11, and the film’s leading star has just shed some light on which former actor he’s compared to most. Taking on the lead role of Clark Kent in James Gunn’s Superman is David Corenswet, who has previously appeared in big hits like Twisters and Pearl. Corenswet takes over the role from beloved actor Henry Cavill, who first played the character in 2013’s Man of Steel before suiting up for the final time in the Black Adam post-credit scene. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly to talk about Superman and the future of the DCU, Corenswet was asked which former actor he’s been compared to most, and it’s one who has never appeared on the big screen:
“I’ve also got a lot of physical comparisons to Tom Welling, who played Superman and Clark Kent on Smallville. When I was growing up, he was the Superman who was on TV every week. I think, to one extent or another, all of the Superman actors… There’s some Venn diagram of our physical characteristics, which makes sense for a superhero who is classically the one who doesn’t wear a mask.”
Corenswet and Welling certainly have similar statures — both bulked up big time to take on the role of Clark Kent, although Corenswet will certainly have more of a chance to portray his alternate Kryptonian ego. It’s also a bit tough to compare Corenswet to Cavill due to the nature of the movies they star in. Films like Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman, both of which were helmed by Zack Snyder, are much darker and grim in tone, which was how he wanted to approach those characters in the DCEU. While Gunn’s movie has yet to be released, early trailers and promotional material paint a much more lighthearted picture, one blooming with more hope and less doom and gloom. Corenswet certainly has the Clark Kent look nailed down, but only time will tell if he can deliver a performance that will stand with some of the all-time great Superman stars.
Who Else Stars in ‘Superman’?
Starring opposite David Corenswet in Superman is Rachel Brosnahan, who will take over the role of Lois Lane from six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams. Lex Luthor, who was previously portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, will now be played by Nicholas Hoult. Superman will also feature a load of other stars to help establish the many heroes in this universe, including Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and more. Wendell Pierce and Skyler Gisondo will also play Daily Planet employees Perry White and Jimmy Olsen, respectively.
