Shrek 5’s New Release Date Sets Up A Must Watch DreamWorks Double Feature

Shrek 5‘s six-month delay is unfortunate, but it sets up an all-star month for DreamWorks in 2027. It’s been 15 years since Shrek Forever After, leaving audiences without their favorite green ogre and talking donkey for a long time. However, the franchise has remained popular thanks to the endless memes and social media posts that even the Shrek 5 teaser mocked.

Despite the controversial Shrek and Fiona redesign, anticipation for the next film is high. However, Shrekaholics will have to wait an additional six months, as the film was recently delayed for a second time. Shrek 5 was initially scheduled to release in summer 2026, but was then pushed to December 23, 2026, and is now releasing on June 30, 2027.

While the official reason is unknown, the change could have been made to move the film away from Dune: Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday, which are scheduled for December 2026. However, this may be a perfect situation for DreamWorks, as it has another film in one of its biggest franchises premiering in the same month.

Shrek 5 And How To Train Your Dragon 2 Both Release In June 2027

DreamWorks has plenty of popular franchises that have generated billions of dollars for the animation studio. Thanks to Shrek 5‘s new release date, two of the studio’s most successful properties will debut in the same month. The live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to fly into theaters on June 11, 2027, a few weeks before the next Shrek installment.

It’s a massive double feature for DreamWorks, and could lead to a wildly profitable month. HTTYD 2 was announced prior to the release of the live-action remake of the first film, showing the confidence that DreamWorks and Universal have in this franchise. Their faith was justified as 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon was a critical and box office success, earning $626 million worldwide.

The animated sequel is the second-highest-grossing film in the franchise, and the live-action remake could perform even better. Meanwhile, Shrek is still DreamWorks’ golden goose. Shrek 2 is still the highest-grossing film in the studio’s history, making nearly $1 billion with $933 million worldwide. The other films performed admirably as well.

The Puss in Boots spin-off films also performed well, further boosting the franchise’s power. After a 17-year gap, Shrek 5 could be a box office juggernaut. New generations have been introduced to the franchise, and many adults have nostalgia for the series. 2025 also proved that How to Train Your Dragon is still in demand, suggesting that June 2027 could be a magical month for DreamWorks.
