Shrek 5’s New Release Date Sets Up A Must Watch DreamWorks Double Feature

Shrek 5‘s six-month delay is unfortunate, but it sets up an all-star month for DreamWorks in 2027. It’s been 15 years since Shrek Forever After, leaving audiences without their favorite green ogre and talking donkey for a long time. While the official reason is unknown, the change could have been made to move the film away from Dune: Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday, which are scheduled for December 2026. Thanks to Shrek 5‘s new release date, two of the studio’s most successful properties will debut in the same month. The live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to fly into theaters on June 11, 2027, a few weeks before the next Shrek installment.

It’s a massive double feature for DreamWorks, and could lead to a wildly profitable month. HTTYD 2 was announced prior to the release of the live-action remake of the first film, showing the confidence that DreamWorks and Universal have in this franchise. Their faith was justified as 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon was a critical and box office success, earning $626 million worldwide.
