Say Goodbye to Vin Diesel’s Most Unexpected Genre Movie Ever

Vin Diesel has become inseparable from his role as Dom Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise, but ten years ago, he starred in a critically panned fantasy movie that just got a tragic streaming update. Diesel stars alongside Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance) in The Last Witch Hunter, the 2015 fantasy film following one man who is the last one standing between humanity and all of the most horrifying witches in history. The Last Witch Hunter is currently streaming on Netflix, but the streamer has unfortunately announced that the last day to watch the movie will come at the end of the month, on August 31.

The Last Witch Hunter was despised by critics upon release, and it wasn’t much of an audience favorite either. The film sits at disastrous scores of 18% from critics and 44% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also failed to find the box office success it would have needed to justify a hefty $90 million budget. The film grossed only $146 million at the box office, putting it nearly $40 million short of its break-even point. Surprisingly, acting legend Michael Caine also has a role in The Last Witch Hunter.

A sequel to The Last Witch Hunter was announced before it even hit theaters, but it now seems unlikely to ever come to fruition after it was so poorly received. Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless wrote the script for The Last Witch Hunter, and Breck Eisner directed the film. Eisner has not directed another movie since his Vin Diesel-led fantasy adventure was released. Ten years before its premiere, however, he teamed up with Matthew McConaughey for Sahara, which is currently streaming on Paramount+.

When Was Vin Diesel’s Last Non-‘Fast & Furious’ Role?

It’s been five years since Vin Diesel played a role in a live-action film that wasn’t Dom Toretto or didn’t require him to wear a motion capture suit. 2020 brought on the release of Bloodshot, the superhero sci-fi film starring Diesel and Eiza González opposite Guy Pearce. The film was panned by critics but moderately enjoyed by audiences, though it came out at an unfortunate time. It was released on March 13, 2020, around the time the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to it grossing only $39 million at the box office against a $45 million budget.

Be sure to watch The Last Witch Hunter before it leaves Netflix on August 31 and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
