Rocket Raccoon is one of the many victims of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s latest release, but at least he has a bright future where the Guardians of the Galaxy are concerned. The MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise stands as one of the wider universe’s very best. At least two out of three are among the MCU’s best movies.
That is no small feat, with James Gunn making audiences care about a group of obscure characters from Marvel Comics. While we do not have an announced project on the MCU’s slate of releases for the Guardians of the Galaxy, the team is expected to be back at some point. When it does, the MCU can make up for a recent tragic development.
Rocket Raccoon Tragically Dies In The MCU’s Last 2025 Release
After the last one of the MCU’s 2025 movies arrived in theaters, the MCU’s final TV show of the year was released in September. Marvel Zombies is a multiverse series that puts an apocalyptic twist on the MCU, with several actors returning to voice their characters. Rocket Raccoon is one of the MCU players involved in the animated series, but his role was short.
Like happened in Avengers: Infinity War, Rocket and Groot arrive alongside Thor in Wakanda to fight Thanos. However, the zombie version of Thanos from the MCU series easily disintegrates the Guardians of the Galaxy members with the Infinity Gauntlet, also leaving Thor horrifically scarred. Now that we know Rocket’s tragic backstory, seeing him die so violently was quite tragic.
Rocket Raccoon Has A Better Storyline Set Up For Him In The Main MCU
While Rocket dies in the MCU’s latest multiverse series, the character has a bright future ahead of him in the main version of the franchise. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Rocket confronts his trauma by defeating the High Evolutionary. At the end of the movie, the team disband, with Rocket becoming the new captain of the cosmic squad.
Joining Rocket will be Groot, who got a major upgrade and looks huge now, and characters like Kraglin, Adam Warlock, Phyla, and Cosmo the Spacedog. With Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord now on Earth, Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon should have a major role to play in the future of the MCU’s cosmic corner, which more than makes up for his brief Marvel Zombies role.
Where Could Rocket’s New Guardians Of The Galaxy Appear Next?
Given that James Gunn left Marvel to spearhead the new DC Universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie franchise is currently in limbo. A fourth movie has yet to be confirmed, with no Guardians of the Galaxy members announced for the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. However, given the crossover nature of the next two Avengers movies, the team likely appear in one of them.
After all, Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to soft reboot the MCU in 2027, so it would make sense for all of Marvel’s major teams to be involved. If the Nova series, which was put on pause, enters development again, then I could also see the Guardians of the Galaxy appearing there. In any case, Rocket Raccoon’s MCU future is brighter than his Marvel Zombies appearance.
