Succession is one of HBO’s biggest hits of all time, and a few years ago, Ridley Scott tried his hand at a replacement that’s resurfaced at the top of streaming charts. In 2021, Scott directed House of Gucci, a family/crime drama telling the story of Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), who marries into the Gucci family, setting them down a path of betrayal, revenge, and death. House of Gucci is streaming exclusively on Amazon MGM+ in America, but globally, the film has returned to the VOD top 10 in several countries, including both Venezuela and Italy.
The parallels between Succession and House of Gucci are hard to deny. Both projects are loosely inspired by real people and follow successful families that are held together more by money than love. The Gucci family made a name for themselves in the world of fashion, while the Roys, who are loosely based on the Murdoch family, are more of a media tycoon. House of Gucci was met divisively upon its release, which led to it earning scores of 61% from critics and 83% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also narrowly scraped past its break-even point by grossing $153 million at the global box office; it cost $75 million to make.
House of Gucci is based on the novel The House of Gucci by Sara Gay Forden, and Becky Johnston teamed up with Roberto Bentivegna to write the script for the film. For director Ridley Scott, House of Gucci came in the same year that he worked with Adam Driver onThe Last Duel, the historical bomb that co-stars Matt Damon. Two years later, he teamed up with Joaquin Phoenix for another historical bomb, Napoleon, which is streaming now on Apple TV.
When Does Ridley Scott’s Next Movie Come Out?
Ridley Scott’s next movie, titled The Dog Stars, will be released exclusively in theaters on March 27, 2026. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world where a virus wipes out most of humanity. Several survivors team up to face the Reapers, a group that targets innocent people. Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi will star in the film, and the supporting ensemble is filled out with Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin. Gladiator II’s Paul Mescal was originally attached to star, but he had to back out due to scheduling conflicts.
Be sure to check out House of Gucci on Amazon MGM+ in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
