With Rebecca Yarros taking a break — and writing a contemporary romance novel — before diving into The Empyrean Series book 4, Fourth Wing fans haven’t had much to get excited about post-Onyx Storm. Of course, Yarros’ work on her upcoming romance book takes us one step closer to the next Fourth Wing sequel. But there’s still a ways to go before she starts writing it, and especially before it’s published.
However, Yarros dropped an exciting tease on Instagram that will catch the attention of Empyrean Series fans, even if it’s not related to the next installment. The author posted a picture of her laptop while on the beach, noting that she’s been feeling like revisiting the world of Fourth Wing. As such, she’s working on a bonus scene:
“Sometimes switching up the office view for a couple of weeks makes you want to dip a toe back in Empyrean and start writing a little bonus scene. You know…just for funsies. “
Upon further inspection, the document open on Yarros’ computer appears to feature a conversation between Garrick and Xaden. In it, Xaden notes that he’s willing to die for Violet before the two agree to “hunt some wyvern.” Going off context clues alone, this could be from the end of Iron Flame, showing a certain segment of the book from Xaden’s perspective.

We Could Get More Material From Xaden’s Perspective At Some Point
It’s unclear if Yarros intends to release the bonus scene she’s working on for The Empyrean Series, as her Instagram caption does claim it’s “for funsies.” However, it wouldn’t be the first bonus chapter we’ve gotten from the author (three are already available on Yarros’ website), and she does include a winky face after that last sentence.
As such, it’s possible she’ll make it public once it’s completed. Yarros is well aware that readers are eager for more content from The Empyrean Series, and some have even expressed the desire to see more of the story from Xaden’s POV, especially after previous bonus chapters. This scene appears to offer just that, potentially digging into his actions when Violet is being interrogated in Iron Flame.
Only time will tell if Yarros chooses to release more bonus material and when, but this is an exciting update for Fourth Wing fans.

With a lengthy wait ahead for Onyx Storm‘s sequel, I’m hopeful that Yarros’ Instagram tease means we’ll eventually get bonus chapters to tide us over until the next installment. It’s just as possible we’ll have to wait until another book to see this content released, or that it simply won’t be. But giving fans small scenes to enjoy would be a smart way to keep them engaged during the break between books.
