Grand Theft Auto Online feels like the beast that will never stop. It defied expectations and evolved far beyond the scope of what players and even Rockstar expected from it, and now it’s gearing up for another promotional period for non-PlayStation Plus owners.
X user PLTytus dug into the code for GTA Online, and Rockstar has made Grand Theft Auto Online free on the PSN, removing the PlayStation Plus subscription requirement. There is a catch, though.
PlayStation Plus Is No Longer Required For GTA Online

If you’re keen on jumping back into GTA Online and don’t have a PlayStation Plus subscription, you’re covered as of today, thanks to the new Safehouse In The Hills update. This update primarily adds mansions into the mix, and is potentially testing a new feature for GTA 6 with seamless building entry without loading screens.
It’s important to put into perspective how popular GTA Online is, even still. GTA 6 is still selling millions of copies year after year, and all of those folks could potentially jump into this living live service world.
This Is Only A Temporary Deal
It’s Expected To Last A Few Weeks
It seems like this deal will last roughly two weeks, according to data points from previous PlayStation Plus GTA Online promotions. That’ll put the promo period right up until the day before Christmas Eve. This is typical of bigger updates for GTA Online, as Rockstar wants people to join in to get hooked, potentially.
I still remember the lengthy wait for GTA Online. When GTA 5 first came out, folks were highly anticipating the idea of multiplayer heists, which was pretty much the extent of content that a lot of fans thought GTA Online would muster up. It turns out that it would become a multi-million-dollar cash cow over time, with Rockstar supporting it far beyond what they even did for Red Dead Redemption Online years later.
Grand Theft Auto Online continues its run as a facet of popular gaming culture, and Rockstar will likely want to keep that streak going leading into Grand Theft Auto 6. Whatever Rockstar has planned for the next iteration of GTA Online, it must be big.
