Percy Jackson Season 2 Is Completely Changing How I View This Major Character

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 is completely changing how I view this one key character. Episode by episode, the show has been doing an impressive job of stepping outside of Percy’s singular POV seen in the books, and the results have been very cool to see.

Thus far in Percy Jackson season 2, no character has arguably benefited more from this approach than Clarisse La Rue, Daughter of Ares (played by Dior Goodjohn). As we see in Percy Jackson season 2, episode 3, Clarisse receives some additional beats and dynamics that change how I’ve typically viewed her in the original books.

How Clarisse’s Role Expands in Percy Jackson Season 2

Percy Jackson season 2, episode 3 spends a good amount of time following Clarisse as she begins her official quest to find the Golden Fleece, even as Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson have already gone rogue on a quest of their own.

Receiving gifts from her father and hitting the high seas, Clarisse is depicted less as an antagonist and more as a conflicted hero, struggling to make her father proud despite his low expectations.

While elements of this are shown in the original Sea of Monsters novel, the new Disney+ expands her arc even further, as we get to see her struggling to command the new undead crew and ship gifted to her by Ares.

Eventually, we get to see Clarisse take charge, inspiring these fallen warriors to keep fighting for glory (even the undead Blockbuster employee). It remarkably mirrors her own ambitions and desire for glory. Likewise, Percy Jackson season 2 has also done something unique with Clarisse’s particular quest prophecy.

Why Clarisse Chooses To Go On Her Sea of Monsters Quest Alone

When Annabeth leaves with Percy and Tyson, Clarisse is given the chance to select new quest mates. Instead, she refuses, telling Ares she didn’t want any dead weight. On the surface, it sounds like typical Clarisse warrior pride.

Instead, the real reason has to do with the final line of her prophecy that surprisingly went unheard in this episode. In the Sea of Monsters novel, Clarisse’s prophecy darkly ends with the line: “And fail without friends, to fly home alone.” As a result, Clarisse believes companionship will lead to failure.

Not wanting to fail nor risk the lives of any potential quest mates, Clarisse is going it alone (though fans of the books know prophecies are never what they appear to be on the surface).

By expanding her arc in these exciting ways beyond Percy’s POV, Percy Jackson season 2 has already transformed Clarisse into one of the show’s most interesting characters (and I’m very excited to see more as the series continues).
