One Of The Best Sci-Fi Shows Of The Century Isn’t Easy To Stream

The Expanse‘s first episode aired a decade ago this December, but despite the space opera’s immense quality, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to stream in parts of the world. The Expanse‘s ending in 2022 saw the first six books in James S.A. Corey’s sci-fi series adapted, but the final three were left unaddressed.

Still, every season of The Expanse combines to tell an epic tale of humanity’s distant future among the stars. Steven Strait’s Captain James Holden and the rest of The Expanse‘s Rocinante crew could still technically return at some point, but it’s not very likely that a continuation will happen. Thankfully, there are already 62 episodes to enjoy – if you’re lucky enough to find them all.

Only Half Of The Expanse Is Available To Stream On Prime Video In Some Countries

Until relatively recently, The Expanse was possible to stream in full for countless Prime Video subscribers. Then, The Expanse season 1 disappeared from the streaming service in some regions, followed by season 2, and then season 3. As a result, only seasons 4-6 remain available for streaming in certain countries, such as the UK.

So, for those looking to experience The Expanse, either for the first time or as part of a rewatch, the show may now be the least accessible it’s been in years. If established fans feel like watching isolated episodes from the final three seasons, then that’s still easy to do. However, starting from the very beginning may not be an option on Prime Video anymore to some fans.

Why The Expanse Seasons 1-3 Are Not Available On Prime Video Everywhere

Although Amazon eventually took over the show’s production from The Expanse season 4, the first three seasons were made by Syfy. When Syfy canceled The Expanse after season 3, Amazon saved the show and made three more batches of episodes before it drew to a close.

As part of the deal, Amazon was initially permitted to globally stream the episodes Syfy made, so all Prime Video subscribers could watch the entire show in one place. Unfortunately, as time has gone by, the rights for The Expanse seasons 1-3 have reverted to Syfy in some regions. So, they might no longer be on Prime Video, or anywhere else as part of a standard subscription, depending on where you live.

Finding The Expanse Seasons 1-3 Is Definitely Worth It

Streaming services are now pretty much the standardized method of media consumption. The convenience of platforms like Prime Video means other methods of watching TV shows have largely taken a backseat. For The Expanse‘s difficult scenario that sees Syfy and Amazon sharing the rights, this is pretty unfortunate.

That said, watching The Expanse in its entirety is still very far from impossible and is worth the extra effort. There are still physical DVD boxsets. Plus, the episodes no longer included in some Prime Video memberships can still be digitally rented or purchased from various platforms. While it’s not quite the streamlined experience it once was, The Expanse is so good that you won’t care about going the extra mile.
