One of Rob Reiner’s Most Rewatchable Masterpieces Is Having a Streaming Resurgence

After the tragic passing earlier this week of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, several of his movies have seen a surge in viewership on streaming platforms. Among them is the courtroom drama A Few Good Men, which was released amid what is widely considered one of the best streaks for any filmmaker in history. The movie was headlined by Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, and Demi Moore, and remains a classic of the courtroom genre. It received widespread acclaim and was a major box office hit. According to FlixPatrol, A Few Good Men jumped back into Apple’s domestic charts a day after Reiner’s death, along with his landmark comedy When Harry Met Sally, and the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap.

Produced on a reported budget of $40 million, A Few Good Mengrossed over $240 million at the worldwide box office. The movie was adapted by Aaron Sorkin from his own 1989 play. Reiner and Sorkin would go on to collaborate a few years later, on the romance drama The American President, starring Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. A Few Good Men was critically acclaimed, going on to earn four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

It now holds a “certified fresh” 84% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “An old-fashioned courtroom drama with a contemporary edge, A Few Good Men succeeds on the strength of its stars, with Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and especially Jack Nicholson delivering powerful performances that more than compensate for the predictable plot.” A co-founder of the Castle Rock Entertainment banner, Reiner would go on to direct hit films such as The Bucket List, which made over $175 million worldwide. He balanced his career as a director with a robust range of acting roles; he memorably appeared in Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street, which grossed more than $400 million worldwide.
