The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise has been more entertaining, funny and well done than anyone really expected, especially after that nightmare of a first draft drawing of Sonic was leaked.
But they went back to the drawing board, literally, and found what worked. The first three movies were a ton of fun, and a fourth is in the works, but we are still a year and a half away from its planned release.
No real news has been released about the movie, but a new rumor has cropped up that may point us in an interesting direction.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman (via SuperHeroHype), the official title for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 could wind up being Sonic CD. This would be a nod to the 1993 platform game, Sonic the Hedgehog CD, which introduced time travel as a game mechanic.
This would make sense given that the post-credit scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 formally introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic into the film franchise, and the Sonic CD game was where both characters originally debuted.
Additionally, Richtman said that Sonic 4 will explore a “darker future,” though further information beyond that is not available at this time.
This is just a rumor at this time and should be treated as such, as there’s been no official announcement from Paramount Pictures regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s plot or title.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to be released in theaters on March 19, 2027.
