New Jensen Ackles, 47, Crime Series Has Critics and Audiences Divided on Rotten Tomatoes

The first three episodes of Jensen Ackles‘ new thriller series are now streaming on Prime Video, but critics and audiences can’t seem to get on the same page about the show. Early reviews for Countdown came in a few days before the premiere, and the show debuted with a 50% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which has since dropped to a disappointing 36%. However, now enough audience reviews have come in to give the show a 63% on the aggregate site, a much more respectable score that fans are more accustomed to seeing from Ackles. This 36% from critics comes from only 11 reviews, so it is subject to change, but this trend does not have Countdown heading in a good direction as the show preps for a long season.

There are three episodes of Countdownstreaming on Prime Video at the time of writing, with 10 more remaining. Prime Video will only release one episode per week for the next two months or so, meaning the show will be running through all of July and August before airing its season finale on September 3. Those who are hoping to see a second season of Countdown can only hope that later episodes can win fans and critics over more than this early batch of episodes, or that it can secure enough viewership to warrant a continuation of the story. In addition to Ackles, Countdown also stars Eric Dane (Euphoria), Jessica Camacho (Bosch: Legacy), Violett Beane (The Flash), and more. It was written and created for television by Derek Haas, who is known for his work on the One Chicago universe.

Will ‘Countdown’ Get a Second Season?

Countdown has not yet been renewed for Season 2, which isn’t surprising considering the show has just kicked off. It’s too early for Prime Video to render a verdict on Countdown Season 2, but series creator Derek Haas has not been shy about sharing his thoughts. Haas recently confirmed that he’s already had thoughts about potential ideas for a Countdown Season 2, but that he doesn’t want to get too far ahead of himself. That’s a fair assessment of the situation, especially after Prime Video recently canceled what many hailed as one of its flagship shows in The Wheel of Time.

The first three episodes of Countdown are now streaming on Prime Video. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the show and Ackles’ future projects.
