Netflix’s foray into haunting miniseries has yielded a lot of interesting fare, some evident from the very opening frames. The Last Night At Tremore Beach follows in the footsteps of shows before it, adapted from Mikel Santiago’s book of the same name. The supernatural thriller follows a struggling pianist who, after a series of personal mishaps, finds himself on a remote beach to finish his recent score. One night, Álex (Javier Rey) gets struck by lightning, which is the catalyst for all the disconcerting events that follow.
It is the opening scene, however, that sets the tone for the rest of the series. During a dark and ominous night, Álex plays piano to the sound of a metronome. After playing a few bars, he hits the wrong note, prompting him to slam the key cover over his hand, breaking it. He screams, and the screen cuts to black. As the next scene opens up a year later, little is explained about that night. That is what makes it so terrifying and ominous. The Last Night At Tremore Beach offers many questions but not so many solutions right off the bat. Instead, the series follows Álex through a world where he is just as confused as the rest of the audience. Even so, the answers to these confusions are right around the corner.
What Is ‘The Last Night At Tremore Beach’ About?
While the opening scene of The Last Night At Tremore Beach is mysterious, the main drag of the miniseries starts to become a little clearer. A year after breaking his hand, Álex is going through a divorce with his wife, presumably brought on by his manic behavior. He lives at Tremore, where he has an affair with the damaged Judy (Ana Polvorosa), and visits with friends on the beach. However, one night, he is suddenly struck by lightning, which alters the course of his life.
Álex’s strange behavior gets even stranger as he starts seeing visions that could be hallucinations, but they could be glimpses into the future. He understands that his mother had a similar affliction and worries the same could be happening to him, but the more time he spends with this “insight,” the more it becomes clear that he is supposed to use his gift for something important. One of these visions reveals itself to him in the form of fish falling from the sky, and his neighbors, Leo (Guillermo Toledo) and María (Pilar Castro), in danger. When he finds them, however, they appear unharmed. The season takes its time with Álex accepting his gift and figuring out what it actually all means.
The larger question is, were these visions brought on by the lightning, or was it simply exacerbated by it? Before going out that night, Álex has a vision of Judy telling him not to leave the house, hours before he is struck by lightning. It also throws into question what his mother, Elvira, was really involved in. These questions are ultimately answered in a finale that lives up to the hype. The twists and turns are customary of any good Netflix thriller as answers to questions slowly reveal themselves. Fans can watch for themselves by streaming all eight episodes of The Last Night on Tremore Beach on Netflix.
