Almost a month into its theatrical run, a clearer picture is forming of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s box office performance. It’s been a highly competitive summer movie season so far, and the odds have always been against The Final Reckoning, considering its astronomical production budget. The movie is still staying afloat, but with more competition around the corner, it’s going to struggle to break even. Produced on a reported budget of $400 million, which makes it one of the most expensive films in history, The Final Reckoningneeds to gross at least $800 million in order to be in the clear.
With $166 million domestically and $340 million from overseas markets, The Final Reckoning has grossed around $506 million worldwide so far. It still hasn’t overtaken Mission: Impossible 2, which was released a quarter-century ago. And, in terms of attendance, it continues to trail the franchise’s first film, which debuted nearly three decades ago. That being said, The Final Reckoning is no longer the series’ lowest-grossing installment; that unenviable honor remains with J.J. Abrams’ Mission: Impossible III, which made just under $400 million worldwide in 2006.
The Final Reckoning has now out-grossed Cruise’s The Last Samurai. This weekend, it also overtook the pandemic era’s biggest hit, Godzilla vs Kong, as well as Gladiator II, The Hangover, last year’s Venom: The Last Dance and 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which made $501 million worldwide. Starring Tom Hardy, The Last Dance served as the conclusion to his successful Venom trilogy of superhero movies. It grossed around $475 million at the worldwide box office, despite mediocre reviews. The Last Dance holds a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is exactly half of the 80% that The Final Reckoning is currently sitting at.
‘The Final Reckoning’ Is Far from Being in the Clear
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise, the movie has proven to be divisive among critics and crowds, with its elaborate plot and ambitious action sequences becoming hot topics of discussion. The Final Reckoning was marketed as the conclusion to Cruise’s career-defining franchise, although there hasn’t been any official word about its future yet. One thing’s clear, if this actually ends up being the curtain-closer, it won’t be the celebratory success that anybody involved would’ve wanted.
