In an interview with the New York Times, The Weeknd admitted he wanted to be this generation’s Michael Jackson in his own way. ‘‘These kids, you know, they don’t have a Michael Jackson,’’ said the singer. ‘‘They don’t have a Prince. They don’t have a Whitney [Houston] . Who else is there? Who else can really do it at this point?’’ However, he emphasizes that he’s not trying to replace Jackson or imitate him. His love for the pop icon, though, shines through in his music. In a separate interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Grammy winner revealed that it was Jackson’s Off the Wall album that inspired him to pursue a career in music. That same album also produced beloved tracks such as “Rock with You,” “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” “Workin’ Day and Night,” “Girlfriend,” “She’s Out of My Life,” and the title track.
“Michael, man, that guy was the star. He invented the star. There will never be another Michael,” The Weeknd said. “I want to make it very clear that I’m not trying to be Michael. He’s everything to me, so you’re going to hear it in my music. ‘Off the Wall’ was the album that inspired me to sing.”
The Weeknd is a polarizing actor and creator. Two of his projects, both of which he helped develop, have earned disappointing critical receptions. The Idol, in particular, received a mere 19% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences weren’t much kinder either, with the show currently holding a 41% audience rating. However, when it comes to his music, it’s hard to deny The Weeknd’s genius for crafting hits. The Canadian singer-songwriter has had a strong record of critical success and has won a total of four Grammy wins out of 14 nominations.
