Over two decades ago, fans bid farewell to one of America’s most-watched teen dramas, which has since launched its main cast to international stardom while also influencing the creation of contemporary teen-centered shows. Dawson’s Creek is that beloved classic, and it last aired on May 14, 2003, with a bittersweet two-part series finale set in the year 2008. While that was the last run for the romance series, it appears that there were previously discussions about it coming back to life, along with the return of the original cast.
During an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Kevin Williamson, the original creator of Dawson’s Creek, spoke of those past conversations centered on the classic’s revival, which also piqued the interest of the original cast. Apparently, he thought the show’s era was over, but then those few years when every TV show was getting a reboot came about, and Dawson’s Creek couldn’t just be left out. In his words:
“I thought Dawson’s Creek was behind me and in the past, but they desperately kept trying to get me to go back to it when there was that reboot craze. They kept trying and trying to get me, trying to get James [Van Der Beek] , trying to get Katie [Holmes] , and get us all involved.”
What Would’ve Happened in A ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Reboot?
Even with the cast interested in the Dawson’s Creek revival, the timing never worked out according to Williamson, who noted that “no one could come to terms at the same time to put it together.” He further dropped a few ideas about what could’ve happened if the show had returned, saying:
“We kind of just went, ‘We did it and it was good.’ And what would it be today? We did the finale, we felt it was complete, we did five years in the future. You could definitely do a story about the children of [these characters] if you wanted to. You could maybe even do aThis Is Us sort of thing. But ultimately, we felt like maybe it could live again in another way, but not as a reboot.”
Created by Williamson, Dawson’s Creek premiered on January 20, 1998, and aired all six seasons on The WB. It followed the lives of a close-knit group of friends in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts, beginning in high school and continuing into college. Starring in this widely celebrated classic were James Van Der Beek as Dawson Leery; Katie Holmes as his best friend and love interest, Joey Potter; Joshua Jackson as their friend Pacey Witter; and Michelle Williams as Jen Lindley, a New York City transplant to Capeside.
