Sophie Turner is ready to shake things up with Lara Croft. The actor, who leads Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series, says her version of the iconic video game hero won’t lean into the oversexualized image the character has often been associated with.

Turner will star as Lara Croft in Prime Video’s Tomb Raider, bringing the legendary adventurer to the small screen in a more grounded, character-first way. Speaking to The Los Angeles Times, Turner didn’t mince words about how she’s approaching the role.
She is not going to be a “sex bombshell,” making it clear she isn’t interested in playing into outdated tropes. “It’s about her and her story and what drives her, rather than what so many people also love about her, which is how hot she is in the games and the movies,” Turner added. “But I really want to show the other side.”
That “other side,” according to Turner, is all about confidence and capability. “She’s so unashamedly capable,” she said. “She is not a woman who hides her strengths at all.” That perspective fits neatly with the creative direction of the series, which is being created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known for Fleabag. While plot details are still under wraps, the emphasis appears to be firmly on Lara Croft as a fully formed person rather than a visual spectacle.
Sophie Turner’s take on Lara Croft also reflects the kinds of roles she gravitates toward. “I want really nuanced, authentic character,” she has said—an approach she’s clearly bringing to Tomb Raider. And action-heavy projects aren’t new territory for her, given her previous work as Jean Grey in the X-Men films.
For now, fans will have to wait a bit longer. Tomb Raider is expected to release on Prime Video in 2027 or 2028, though an official release date hasn’t been announced yet.
