Despite the struggle of his recent passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner is so often a sure-fire way to box office success. From his Academy Award wins for Dances With Wolves to the 2016 superhero clash Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Costner’s highest-grossing movie, the acclaimed Hollywood mainstay has acted in almost $5 billion worth of box office releases. However, not all of his best movies have hit the heady heights of box office immortality, with one such film currently proving a free streaming hit in the U.S.
At the time of writing, Brian De Palma’s star-studded gangster epic, The Untouchables, is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Tubi. Although the movie only made $76 million at the 1987 box office, this was still just enough to become a small success, based on the film’s $25 million budget. With this almost entirely made from domestic revenue, The Untouchables finished 1987 as the sixth highest-grossing movie in the U.S., a list topped by 3 Men and a Baby. The movie stars Costner alongside the legendary Robert De Niro as Al Capone, one of the Goodfellas star’s most famous roles. A synopsis for The Untouchables reads:
“After building an empire with bootleg alcohol, legendary crime boss Al Capone (Robert De Niro) rules Chicago with an iron fist. Though Prohibition agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) attempts to take Capone down, even his best efforts fail due to widespread corruption within the Windy City’s police force. Recruiting an elite group of lawmen who won’t be swayed by bribes or fear, including Irish-American cop Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), Ness renews his determination to bring Capone to justice.”
‘The Untouchables’ Wasn’t a Hit With Every Critic
Despite boasting a “certified fresh” 83% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus reading, “Slick on the surface but loaded with artful touches, Brian De Palma’s classical gangster thriller is a sharp look at period Chicago crime, featuring excellent performances from a top-notch cast,” the most famed critic of his time had a mixed reaction to The Untouchables. Roger Ebert awarded the film just 2.5/4 stars, admitting there is an “energy that’s lacking during most of The Untouchables.” He said, “The performances are another disappointment,” shockingly adding, “The big disappointment is Robert De Niro’s Al Capone.”
The Untouchables is streaming now on Tubi. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest streaming stories.
