Kenan and Kel Reunite To Resurrect a 77-Year-Old Horror Comedy Classic

Longtime comedy partners Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are reuniting to revive a stone-cold horror classic. The duo is set to star in Kenan and Kel Meet Frankenstein, a horror comedy inspired by the classic Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. The film is set to begin production this summer. Thompson and Mitchell will star in the film as a pair of hapless delivery drivers; a routine drop-off turns into a living nightmare when the two enter a forbidding castle and awaken the undead creation of Dr. Frankenstein!

Says Saturday Night Live star Thompson, “We’re excited to bring a fresh take on a classic monster story and have some fun doing it.” Producer John Ryan Jr. likens the film to “Shaun of the Dead meets Scooby-Doo.” Thompson and Mitchell first worked together on the Nickelodeon sketch series All That; one of the show’s most popular sketches, Good Burger, was spun off into an eponymous feature film in 1997. The duo subsequently starred on the Nickelodeon sitcom Kenan & Kel, and recently reunited for the Paramount+ film Good Burger 2.

What Is ‘Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein’ About?

Comedy partners Bud Abbott and Lou Costello had fallen on hard times by the late 1940s, but soon revived their fortunes with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, a comedy romp through the classic Universal Monsters. The pair star as Chick Young and Wilbur Grey, a pair of baggage handlers who stumble across a pair of unusual crates: one contains the lumbering Frankenstein’s Monster (Glenn Strange, who’d inherited the role from Boris Karloff), and the other holds the coffin of Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi, in his second and final big-screen appearance as the iconic vampire). Pretty soon, the boys get entangled with a mad scientist, an undercover insurance investigator, and Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.), who’s cursed to become the Wolf Man under a full moon! Hijinks, as you can imagine, ensue. The film was such a success that it resulted in several sequels, in which the duo met the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Kenan and Kel Meet Frankenstein will be produced by Thompson, Mitchell, Ryan Jr., Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Carter Swan, and executive produced by Will Hariton, Azim Spicer, and Monica Weber. The script is by Jonah Feingold (At Midnight, 31 Candles).
