Keanu Reeves’ John Wick Replacement Gets a Promising Update From ‘Fast & Furious’ Director

Good things come for those who wait, and it seems that is the case for Keanu Reeves and his passion project, the BRZRKRmovie, which has been in development for some time now. The John Wick vet has long set his sights on this new adventure, which is based on the comic book franchise Reeves created and launched in March 2021. Around the time of the comic’s launch, Netflix came onboard and work began on developing both a live-action movie and an anime series. In March 2025, it was announced that Netflix had brought on Justin Linas the director of BRZRKR. Thankfully, after multiple iterations of the source material failed to see progress made on the project, Reeves’ passion project seems set to make some progress, according to an update from Lin.

BRZRKR is penned by Mattson Tomlin, who joins Lin as part of the creative team for the screen adaptations. Tomlin came on board the film in October 2021 to pen the script, while also being attached since 2024 as the showrunner for the proposed anime series. While speaking with ScreenRant, Lin, known for his work on the Fast and Furious franchise, offered an encouraging update on the development of the BRZRKR movie. The director told the outlet that it’s been a team effort to properly fine-tune the vision for the film as he, Reeves, and Tomlin “have been working together” on it. After describing himself as being “very fortunate to be invited” to be a part of “Keanu’s creation,” the director added:

“I can tell you that I am at a point in my career right now where time and efficiency is driving all my decisions and the people that I want to work with, and that’s one of my favorite projects.”

Lin is most acclaimed for the work he did prior to the release of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. The director would ultimately depart that franchise following Fast X, amidcreative differences. Lin expanded on getting to know Reeves and “coming in and joining someone on a journey that is their creation.” The director goes on to make assurances to “honor [the comic] in its spirit” even as he determines the best path to “bring it to live-action.” He adds, “I would say that I’ve been very fortunate that, as I’m talking to you now, I get to work with these amazing people. I’m really looking forward to my next chapter as a filmmaker.”

BRZRKR is a comic book story Reeves co-created with Brazilian artist Rafael Grampá. The 12-issue series raised over $1 million for its Kickstater with the comic proving to be an instant smash hit, with the first issue selling over 615,000 copies. The story follows a warrior who has lived for thousands of years and is now blighted by the curse of immortality. It’s a curse which has led “B” to fight against unimaginable terrors over several millennia. However, just when meaning drains from all things, B will be given the opportunity to go down a path that will reveal the truth about his condition and how to stop it.

A release date for BRZRKR hasn’t been set by Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
