Jurassic World Rebirth’s Budget & How Much Office It Needs To Succeed

Gareth Edwards’ upcoming sci-fi sequel Jurassic World Rebirth will reset the franchise after a disastrous conclusion to the previous trilogy, and therefore both its budget and box office expectations are understandably high. Its high-profile cast is headlined by Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, with Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Ed Skrein in supporting roles.

Jurassic World Rebirth picks up five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, by which time all surviving dinosaurs have settled into a few tropical climates. Scarlett Johansson’s Zora Bennett leads a team onto a remote island in search of the largest remaining dinosaurs, but their expedition takes a deadly turn when they discover the mutated dinosaurs that still inhabit the island.

Exclusive: Jurassic World Rebirth director addresses the secret nine franchise commandments developed by the original Jurassic Park screenwriter.

The early Jurassic Park movies set special effects standards in the franchise’s infancy, and their overall success has led to bloated production budgets ever since. That peaked with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion, which both had all-in production costs (including marketing) reportedly over $500 million.

Naturally, the franchise’s track record has yielded familiar questions about Jurassic World Rebirth. While it still carries a summer tent pole blockbuster price tag, it’s a far cry from its predecessors.

Jurassic World Rebirth’s Budget Is Reportedly $180 Million

The Budget Is Scaled Back Significantly From The Franchise’s Previous Movie

The reported production budget for Jurassic World Rebirth is around $180 million, putting it behind all three most recent Jurassic World movies. That number will eventually get larger after marketing, but as it stands, that budget is much more in line with the average summer blockbuster as opposed to the stratospheric costs of other Jurassic World franchise movies.

Jurassic World Rebirth’s Opening Weekend Box Office Projections

It Should Have One Of The Summer’s Best Openings

Early box office projections for Jurassic World Rebirth have it on pace for one of the best openings of 2025. It will of course be helped by the holiday weekend; with the 4th of July on a Friday, the first major showings will occur on Wednesday, July 2nd. The current consensus places the movie’s five-day opening weekend projection at $115-$135 million.

That would put it have it threatening (although likely still short) of projections for some of the summer’s other massive blockbusters, including the MCU’s latest entry in Fantastic Four: First Steps and the new DCU’s first movie, James Gunn’s Superman. However, if that projection holds, it would also be the lowest opening weekend for any Jurassic World movie.

That projection is admittedly fairly conservative, and it’s entirely realistic that Jurassic World Rebirth could come in closer to $125-$145 during the five-day opening weekend when all is said and done. Positive early reactions for Rebirth could yield excellent word of mouth for the standalone sequel, driving its box office return even higher.

Jurassic World Rebirth Needs To Make $450 Million To Be A Box Office Success

It Needs To Earn Roughly 2.5x Its Budget

The standard calculation for a movie’s profitability is usually 2.5x the given production budget. Marketing costs still need to be factored in, and for as high-profile a movie as Jurassic World Rebirth, those costs can get exorbitant quickly. With what we know about the budget, the new sci-fi action movie will need to cross the $450 million mark worldwide to be considered a box office success.

Jurassic World Rebirth seems destined to be a hit at the box office, especially given the positive early sentiment from fans and critics. Its more reasonable budget (compared to its predecessors) should all but guarantee profitability, but with summer movie season in full swing, the 4th of July holiday helping along its opening weekend, and the ravenous historical audience appetite for the franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth should be a big hit for Universal.
