Jon Hamm’s Illegal Deals Have Left “Missing Pieces To This Puzzle” In Landman Season 2

Jon Hamm’s Monty Miller may have passed away from heart problems in the dramatic last episode of Landmanseason 1, but the character’s presence will still be felt as the show returns for season 2, thanks to his questionable business practices.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Landman season 2 star Kayla Wallace discussed the “missing pieces to the puzzle” her character Rebecca will have to reckon with as M-Tex Oil continues operations in the wake of owner Monty’s untimely death.

The only guy that can answer [the questions] is no longer here,” Wallace said of the void left behind by Monty’s passing. “So it’s kind of like you’re in an escape room and, ‘Maybe we’ll try this. Oh no, that information is not there. Let’s look here.’”

The Landman season 2 trailer teased the fallout from Monty’s deals, showing his widow Cami (Demi Moore) discovering evidence of his shady activities. Running M-Tex is now on the deceased Monty’s wife, and Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris.

Attorney Rebecca’s challenge is to get inside the mind of Monty, a businessman who “didn’t play by the rules,” Wallace said. She added:

So you’ll see a lot of obstacles this season. We’ve seen a couple in the first two episodes and you’ll see many more coming our way. We do not have it easy this year.

Landman season 2star Colm Feore echoed those sentiments, discussing the challenges faced by his character Nathan and Wallace’s Rebecca as the company lawyers clean up the mess left behind from Monty’s unorthodox deal-making.

As the reveals come and we try to piece together what’s going on, we’re doing it in a very strategic but legal way,” Feore explained, “and we’re also peeling back the layers and saying, ‘Okay, now this, it leads to that.’”

Feore teased that Nathan and Rebecca’s frustration will lead to violence which “takes things up a notch in order to open more doors and get us on the right track.”

And I think the audience will find it very compelling,” Feore added. He then went deeper into the secret of Monty’s success as an oil-man, which was more to do with his fearlessness as a gambler than any special business acumen he may have possessed:

Particularly when I questioned your use of the word illegal, one of Monty’s best tricks was playing within the rules, but being really, really willing to risk total collapse, as Tommy says of him way back in season one, I think to Boss and one of the other guys there, the reason he’s a billionaire is he put it all on black and won.

Monty’s gambles put Nathan and Rebecca in a tough spot, Feore then explained:

And so he didn’t tell us that that’s what he was doing, which is the problem, because we do the day-to-day work. When Rebecca, as a litigator comes in to do the protect the company work, that’s when we need the answers to this stuff. On the day-to-day, I’m in a need to know basis. I will just get this contract, you sign it, we do it. That’s that.

In addition to Feore and Wallace, and the aforementioned Thornton and Moore, the Landman season 2 cast includes returning stars Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, and Michelle Randolph, along with new addition Sam Elliott. Andy Garcia sees an expanded season 2 role after getting guest star billing in season 1.
