John Landis’ Iconic 89% Rotten Tomatoes Werewolf Movie Returns to Free Streaming

Now that October is in full swing, fans are binging the horror genre in preparation for Halloween. From creature features, supernatural stories, to outright gore and psychological horror, the genre has a lot to offer for every kind of audience. For fans of horror classics, one of the best creature features has found a new streaming home.

Considered one of the best monster movies, John Landis’ An American Werewolf in Londonis streaming free on Tubi. The movie received wide appreciation for its creature design and iconic transformation sequence. While most movies at the time either used camera tricks and sly editing, or would take place off-screen, Landis showcased one of the most dynamic werewolf transformations in film history. Further, makeup artist Rick Baker bagged an Oscar for his transformational prosthetic work.

The horror comedy follows David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne), two American college students, who are attacked by a werewolf while hiking in the British countryside. While Jack is killed, David is mauled but survives with a strange bite. Weeks later while recovering in a London hospital, David is plagued by nightmares and visits from Jack’s ghost, who warns him that he is slowly turning into a werewolf.

Thematically, the movie addresses the transformation of identity, the burden of friendship and guilt, and the clash between our world and the supernatural. It has a comedic tone balanced with dramatic and brilliant underlying themes. An American Werewolf in London is now considered a cult classic with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating from the critics and an 85% score from fans. It was also a box office hit, earning $62 million at the box office against a $5.8 million budget.

The movie has some brilliant performances that highlight the drama and comedic tone of the script. Along with Naughton as David and Dunne as Jack, the movie also cast Jenny Agutter as Alex Price, John Woodvine as Dr. J.S. Hirsch, Don McKillop as Inspector Villiers, and Frank Oz as Mr. Collins. Further rounding out the cast are Paul Kember as Sergeant McManus, Sydney Bromley as Alf, Frank Singuineau as Ted, Will Leighton as Joseph, and Geoffrey Burridge as Harry Berman.
