Jason Statham’s 9 Million Sci-Fi Sequel Devours Its Way Onto a New Streaming Home

Over the past few months, a few Jason Statham features have made their way to new streaming homes both in the U.S. and globally. That will continue in the new year as one of the action icon’s least-favored movies has been added to Prime Video’s 2026 catalog. Meg 2: The Trench was a critical misfire upon its theatrical release in the U.S. on August 4, 2023. It is a sequel to the 2018 shark flick The Meg, and is based on the 1999 novel The Trench by Steve Alten.

Prime Video began streaming Meg 2: The Trench on January 1, 2026, giving many Statham fans the chance to revisit the action favorite. Ben Wheatley directed the film, while Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris all returned as writers from the first Meg. Statham also makes a return as Jonas Taylor alongside Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis. The cast also includes Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Wu Jing.

Warner Bros. Pictures released Meg 2 in the U.S. following its world premiere at the Shanghai International Film Festival on June 9, 2023. Similar to The Meg, the sci-fi sequel follows a group of scientists who must outrun and outswim colossal Megalodons when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Filming for Meg 2 began at the end of January 2022 at the Warner-owned Leavesden Studios outside London, with principal photography starting on February 4, 2022. Shooting continued through May of the same year, concluding between late spring and early summer.

Jason Statham’s Sci-Fi Sequel Was a Critical Flop

Similar to The Meg, which holds a 47% Tomatometer score, Meg 2 received negative reviews from critics and earned a disappointing 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus notes that while the movie has “its fun moments,” it suffers from “a disjointed story that drifts for too long before finally delivering a few campy thrills.” The audience, on the other hand, shares a different opinion as it has a 72% Popcornmeter score, while they also agree that once Meg 2 gets going, it delivers “most of what viewers are looking for in a creature feature.”
