James Gunn Gives Disappointing Update About One of ‘Superman’s Most Epic Easter Eggs

Easter eggs in big blockbuster franchises are almost expected. When it comes to James Gunn’s Superman, which has officially ushered in his DCU, it’s clear: things are just getting started. The 83% Certified Fresh film stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, among others. One of the film’s biggest Easter eggs came in the form of a mural in the rotunda of the Hall of Justice. The mural featured the likes of Kent Nelson aka Doctor Fate, Ted Grant aka Wildcat, a Speedster (unclear who), all pointing to characters commonly seen not within the Justice League, but instead the Justice Society of America. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn explained that the mural wasn’t just thrown together and has bigger implications as the DCU moves forward. “Oh, there was a ton of thought put into it. A ton of thought.” And as for if fans would get to see any of the characters spotted in the mural, Gunn says:

“Not necessarily specifically see all of them, but yes, some of them we already have in the works in different things in different ways.”

The Mural in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Sent the Internet Into a Frenzy

While it seems like Superman did not need help with flashy Easter eggs to become a resounding success for Gunn’s DCU, longtime DC Comic fans more than enjoyed the inclusion of the mural in the Hall of Justice. The Justice Society of America has previously been featured in other DC Comic adaptations before. Millennials’ earliest memories of seeing those characters come off the comic book page likely lied in the Tom Welling-led Smallville. In DCTV, the characters were featured in Season 2 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Gunn’s take on JSA members has fans on X (formerly Twitter) champing at the bit of what’s to come and, better yet, who could be playing those characters?

When Gunn confirmed Dr. Fate’s presence on the mural in an interview with Josh Horowitz, was that specifically Pierce Brosnan‘s Dr. Fate? Or are they looking to bring in someone new? The confirmation has since sparked an entire Internet frenzy, with fancastings for different characters left and right. Another character fans seemingly spotted was Ted Grant aka Wildcat, another prevalent JSA member. Fancasting ranged from Law & Order: Organized Crime‘s Christopher Melonito Reacher‘s Alan Ritchson. Ritchson, ironically enough, has also so frequently been fancasted as Batman, that even Gunn himself has responded to those rumors, saying in part, “I am a big Alan Ritchson fan, both as an actor and as a guy… let’s just wait to see what happens.” When and how we’ll see more of those characters featured on the mural remains to be seen as it’s all in Gunn’s hands.
