One of the next Suicide Squad spinoffs in the DC Universe gets a new update from James Gunn, as he comments on rumors about the Wallershow. With Peacemaker season 2 slated to premiere this August, another player from the DCEU movie timeline era is set to headline their own show, as DC Studios have been working on Waller, an Amanda Waller-centric series for Viola Davis that would finally put her character in the spotlight. However, updates on the Suicide Squad spinoff series have been very limited since the initial announcement in January 2023, when Gunn and Peter Safran revealed several Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” projects.
As there are always rumors floating around various superhero projects, fans recently checked in with Gunn on Threads about the status of Waller. After one user asked the DC Studios co-CEO, “Are the rumors about the Waller show being reworked into a Checkmate show B.S too,”Gunn shared the following response:
Gunn also gave clarification that the Waller TV show is still in development, confirming that the series has not been canceled. Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver were announced to be the showrunners for Waller, with Davis serving as an executive producer.
What James Gunn’s Waller Updates Mean For The DCU TV Show
Gunn’s Waller clarifications show that DC Studios is committed to trying to get Davis’ spinoff series off the ground. While it may not be turned into a Checkmate series, that doesn’t mean that the famous organization couldn’t be part of Amanda’s solo series. Since the DCEU never got to introduce Checkmate, it leaves the door wide open for the DCU timeline to tackle it, while also exploring more of Amanda’s comic material through the Waller TV show.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant back in November 2024, Steve Agee shared an update about Waller where he confirmed that the spinoff was still being written, and given Gunn’s update, that is seemingly where they are still at, at this point. While this, fortunately, means the show hasn’t been canceled, it is crucial to take into account that Waller hasn’t been fully greenlit yet, which is why it is still only in development. However, given that DC Studios hasn’t scrapped Waller altogether, it seems there is an active effort to try and make the release happen, even if the wait for it may be longer than expected.
Our Take On James Gunn’s Waller Updates
Given the rich history that comes with Amanda Waller in the comics, it’s great to hear from Gunn that Waller is still something they are pursuing, as there are many directions they can take with Davis’ character in the DCU. With Davis being one of the highlights of the DCEU while also not getting enough time to shine, the DCU has the chance to explore her character more in Waller and future projects that she takes part in. Hopefully, before 2025 is over, there will ideally be more progression on Waller, including whether or not the show will start filming this year.
