“It’s a Universe”: ‘S.W.A.T’ May Be Over, but Sony’s Top Boss Just Delivered the Best Spin-Off News

It’s now been just over two months since S.W.A.T. was canceled by CBS, but fans of the series didn’t have to wait too long for some good news. Earlier this week, it was announced that a new spin-off series, S.W.A.T. Exiles, is officially in the works with leading star Shemar Moore set to return and reprise his role as Hondo. Details about the series are sparse as it’s in the very early stages of development, but the show just got its most exciting update yet.

Sony TV bosses Katherine Pope and Keith Le Goy recently sat down for an interview with Variety to talk about the future of the S.W.A.T. franchise. Now that we know Moore is returning as Hondo, fans everywhere are curious about other fan favorites returning in the spin-off series. Variety asked if there was any chance of other S.W.A.T. stars reprising their roles alongside Moore in S.W.A.T. Exiles, and Pope teased not only the possibility, but that fans should “expect” to see some of their favorites:

“For sure. As Keith was just saying, it’s a universe. There is a clear world that we’re exploring here. We’re a few weeks in. We’re still putting it all together, but for sure, I think you can expect some of your favorites to be part of it in some way.“

It’s yet to be worked out who is going to return in S.W.A.T. Exiles, but there are a few names fans have their sights set on who have starred in nearly every episode of the series. Through 163 episodes of S.W.A.T., Jay Harrington is the only one to appear as Sergeant David ‘Deacon’ Kay in every single episode, other than Moore. Following closely behind them with 162 episodic credits is David Lim as Officer Victor Tan, and Patrick St. Esprit has also appeared in 157 episodes as Commander Robert ‘Bob’ Hicks.
