Netflix has granted a series order to a brand new crime drama, which serves as the latest TV spin-off of a popular 2015 Italian movie that took place in Rome. Titled SuburraMaxima, the new show will consist of six episodes.
What do we know about Netflix’s SuburraMaxima show?
Per Deadline, SuburraMaxima will be directed by Michele Alhaique (Public Disorder, Romulus) and Leonardo D’Agostini (Luna Park). The cast includes Giacomo Ferrara, Carlotta Antonelli, Filippo Nigro, Francesco Gheghi, Aliosha Massine, Marlon Joubert, and Martina La Manna. Ferrara, Antonelli, and Nigro will be reprising their respective roles as Spadino, Angelica, and Amedeo from the first two TV spin-offs, 2017’s Suburra: Blood on Rome and 2023’s Suburræterna.
“The series will open where the previous chapter ended, with a massive police raid wiping out the criminal balance in Rome,” reads the initial logline. “Nine years later, Alberto is released from prison, ready to start a new life away from crime. But the curse of Suburra leaves him no escape, and he will soon be forced to get his hands dirty once again. Together with Angelica and Cinaglia, he will find himself fighting both old enemies and a new, ruthless criminal clan.”
Ferrara is the show’s only character who has also appeared in the original movie. The spin-off is produced by ITV Studios-owned company Cattleya. At the moment, it has no official release date yet.
The original movie was directed by Stefano Sollima, based on Carlo Bonini and Giancarlo De Cataldo’s 2013 novel Suburra. The story centered around the connections between Rome’s organized crime and politics. It was led by acclaimed Italian actors Pierfrancesco Favino, Elio Germano, and Claudio Amendola. The film currently holds an approval rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
