Hazbin Hotel Is Raising The Bar For Action Animation In Season 2

Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano and star Kimiko Glenn hint at elevated action and animation in season 2. The animated adult musical series revolves around Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen) and her attempts to rehabilitate demons through the Hazbin Hotel establishment so they can ultimately leave Hell and go to Heaven.

Season 2 of Hazbin Hotel will make its Prime Video debut on October 29. Along with Henningsen reprising the role of Charlie and Glenn coming back as Niffty, season 2 will also feature the returns of Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz), Vox (Christian Borle), Husk (Keith David), and Sir Pentious (Alex Brightman).

While speaking with ScreenRant at New York Comic Con, Medrano teases that there is a considerable amount of action in season 2 and that “the animation really leveled up.” Medrano praises the upcoming season’s artwork and music as well, and emphasizes that these strengths are part of the creative team understanding the show better than ever before. Vivienne Medrano: There’s a lot of action this season. I think I’m most excited because, yes, I think the animation really leveled up. I think the team behind it really locked in. We all understood the show more, and I think we were given more opportunity to really let the artists shine. The artwork in the season is gorgeous, and I think the songs are really good. And, as usual, the song sequences are the most babied sequences.

Glenn builds on Medrano’s comments by promising that some background characters will have a more prominent role this season and that audiences will get to know all the characters better.

Kimiko Glenn: It’s also really cool because, in an ensemble cast, you get to see certain people that maybe were a little more in the background, or taking a back seat last season. People step into the forefront this season, and they have much bigger storylines. And you get to know people more. You get to know all the characters more, which is what I think the fans are really going to be obsessed with.

ScreenRant also asked about the possibility of a sing-along screening for season 2. While none are confirmed yet, Medrano expresses hopes that they will happen, especially with several parts of the new season being well-suited for theatrical screens.

Vivienne Medrano: There just was one. I felt so bad, I was in Tokyo, so I wasn’t able to go to any. But I saw all the videos, and they were making me so happy. There needs to be a season 2 one, especially since there’s some parts of season 2 that will look amazing on a big screen. I want that so badly.

Medrano and Glenn’s comments confirm that Hazbin Hotel season 2 will have a larger scale than season 1 since the action, animation, artwork, songs, and character-driven storylines are better than ever before. This is an impressive feat considering the overwhelmingly positive reviews for Hazbin Hotel season 1.

The increased emphasis on action makes sense given that Vox’s war on Heaven is escalating. At the same time, the show will not be losing the elements that made it a hit during season 1, including Hazbin Hotel season 2’s musical numbers that Medrano confirms were “the most babied sequences.”

Given the success of Wicked and K-Pop Demon Hunters’ theatrical sing-along screenings during the past year, there is definitely recent precedent to have one for Hazbin Hotel. Not only are the songs a perfect fit for this format, but so are the action and animation that deserve to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

As for Glenn’s comments about more characters receiving focus, this is a promising sign that Hazbin Hotel‘s most burning questions will be answered in season 2 and no storyline with potential will be left untouched.
