Great Scott! ‘Back to the Future’ Is Headed Back to Theaters for Its 40th Anniversary

Fuel up your DeLorean, because this fall Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are sending you back in time. Back to the Future turns 40 this year, and to celebrate, it’s coming back to theaters. What’s more, there’ll be more exclusive merchandise and collectibles to mark the occasion than you can fit in a Mr. Fusion.

Back to the Future will return to theaters for a limited time starting on October 31; tickets are available now on Fandango. That includes immersive, premium formats like Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and D-BOX, so you’ll be able to race along the streets of Hill Valley with Marty and Doc. If you’d rather watch the movie at home, Universal has you covered; the film and its two sequels will also be re-released on 4K Blu-ray in a special SteelBook edition. Star Michael J. Fox has also written a memoir of his time making the film, Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum. And there’s more merchandise on the way: everything from Lego sets to Funko Pops to guitars, and much, much more.

What Is ‘Back to the Future’ About?

Teenager Marty McFly (Fox) has a rough life; his parents, George and Lorraine (Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson) are sad sacks who get bullied by the obnoxious Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson), and Marty’s only real friend is eccentric elderly inventor Emmett “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd). Brown has built a DeLorean sports car into a working time machine, but before he can enjoy the fruits of his success, he’s shot by some irate Libyan gunmen (long story), and Marty is sent hurtling headlong thirty years into the past. Stuck in 1955, can Marty make his way back home and improve his then-teenage parents’ lives in the process? Can he evade Biff and his gang of goons? And can he stop his own mother from falling in love with him?

The massive success of Back to the Future led to two sequels, which were filmed back to back: the second took Marty and Doc to the far-flung future of 2015, a grim alternate 1985, then 1955 again, while the third hurled them into the Wild West past of 1885. However, franchise forefathers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale have been adamant in the intervening decades that the trilogy is complete, and will never get a sequel or reboot.
