PlayStation Plus is the home of several truly amazing titles, from first-party masterpieces to well-known third-party epics. It is a great service to discover new favorites as well as replay old ones, especially for those with plenty of time on their hands. However, it is at its very best when it manages to get a handful of lesser-known yet still incredible games. These are the types of games that are undoubtedly worth playing, but people may be hesitant to buy them due to their being practically unheard of.

The very best PlayStation Plus indie games and even some triple-A titles that have flown under the radar absolutely fit into this category. There are so many great undiscovered or underrated titles on PS Plus begging to be played before they’re eventually pulled from the service. This is true of one particular title, a game so good that it is genuinely shocking so few people talk about it. Fortunately, now that it is free on PS Plus, it has the chance to get its well-deserved time in the spotlight.

A Space For The Unbound Is An Indie Masterpiece

It Is A Perfect Slice-Of-Life Adventure Game

A Space for the Unbound has been quietly awaiting someone to come along and discover it. This is despite its incredibly glowing reviews that paint it as a true masterpiece and a hidden gem. A Space for the Unbound garnered a respectable 85 on Metacritic and currently has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, with 97% of its nearly 6,000 reviews praising it. That’s a lot of love for a game that so few people actually talk about.

What makes A Space for the Unbound extraordinary is its heartbreakingly beautiful narrative that takes place in a very well-realized 90s Indonesia. It perfectly blends explorations of mental health, love, growing up, abuse, and more with surreal, Inception-esque mind-bending sequences in which the player must delve deep into the minds of numerous characters. It is easily one of the very best indie games I have ever played, and I suspect many others will feel the same way.

All of this is brought to life through gorgeous pixel art and a delightful world full of fun details. It teeters on the edge of being a great cozy game while still balancing its heavy themes and engaging gameplay. Across the ten or so hours it took me to beat A Space for the Unbound, I cried multiple times, paused to reflect on what I’d witnessed, and laughed more times than I can count. This is a wonderfully special game, which is what makes me so saddened by the fact that barely anyone has played it.

A Space For The Unbound Is Grossly Overlooked

A Space for the Unbound may have a few thousand reviews on Steam, but it doesn’t get brought up nearly enough. It doesn’t feel as if it penetrated the zeitgeist as much as fans like me would have hoped. I think that’s probably largely due to 2023 hosting some of the greatest games ever made. I mean, when you’re going up against Baldur’s Gate 3, you don’t really stand a chance.

2025’s best roguelike is blending the genre’s greatest aspects with kingdom-building mechanics, making for an experience fans can’t stop raving about.

Now that A Space for the Unbound is on PS Plus and free, perhaps it’s time we changed that narrative. Of course, you’ll need to act fast, as games rarely last long on PlayStation Plus and can be pulled at any moment. It won’t take you long to beat its story, although you’ll probably need a few days to recover afterward, so it is worth giving it a chance over a weekend. Hopefully, A Space for the Unbound can get a little more love now that it is on PlayStation Plus, and more people can start singing its praises.
