With summer winding down, it’s time to look ahead to the spooky season. On top of all the new theatrical releases, the horror genre has been dominating physical media. The fall is no different with the release of Chucky’s complete TV series and the first two Halloween films getting brand new 4K editions. However, in the ’80s there was only one horror icon with the definitive crown: Freddy Krueger. Now a majority of the slasher villain’s films are coming to 4K for the first time.
Warner Bros. will be releasing a new 7-film 4K/Digital combo pack collection this fall with Freddy’s mean burnt mug on the cover. The films are the first seven entries in the franchise, including the 1984 classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy’s Revenge, Dream Warriors, The Dream Master, The Dream Child, Freddy’s Deadand Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. This is the second 4K release coming for Freddy, as it was previously reported that the same batch of slashers would be getting an Amazon-exclusive 4K steelbook collection, after the first film got the individual 4K treatment last year for the franchise’s 40th anniversary. The standard seven-film collection will be $99.99 USD.
“You’re My Boyfriend Now Nancy!”
It’ll be interesting to see if any of the sequels get individual 4K releases. While none are as classic as the first film, there are a few gems that are must-watches for any slasher fan. This includes A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. The latter of which sees an entity terrorize Heather Langenkamp (Nancy from the first film), Craven (as himself) and Robert Englund (who plays Freddy Krueger in the franchise) in the real world. Sound familiar? The director would make Screamtwo years later with a similar meta approach.
Like the Blu-ray collections that were released a handful of years ago, the only two films not included in these 4K sets are Freddy vs. Jason and the 2010 Nightmare on Elm Street remake starring Rooney Mara. The remake is often considered the worst of the franchise, being a lackluster shot-for-shot recreation of the original Nightmare. Whether these two films come to 4K in the future remains to be seen.
Is Freddy Krueger Really Dead?
There hasn’t been a new Nightmare on Elm Street film in 15 years, and there are no signs of this slasher king haunting our dreams in the near future. However, Freddy will definitely be on the big screen again, it’s just a matter of when. In the meantime, you can pre-order Nightmare on Elm Street’s 4K collection on Gruv’s website. The set will be released on September 23, 2025. That’s just in time for the second film, Freddy’s Revenge, to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
