The Netflixlineup for the second half of 2025 is stacked, with the return of Stranger Things and the arrival of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery as particular highlights that continue to dominate the streaming charts at the time of writing. One film to have recently fallen out of said streaming charts but is arguably the best of all the new Netflix content in recent months is Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, the iconic director’s long-awaited tale of the legendary tale by Mary Shelley.
For everyone who adored every brooding shadow and ambitious set piece in del Toro’s latest work, you’ll be happy to learn that another of his monster movies is about to join Netflix. As of January 1, 2026, Hellboy, the steampunk fantasy horror starring Ron Perlman as the titular demon, will be available for your viewing pleasure on Netflix, helping bring a flash of burning red to your cold, blue January. Sporting an 81% critical score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Hellboy is fondly remembered as a hit for del Toro, as he adapted the Dark Horse Comics character, created by Mike Mignola. The consensus on the site reads, “With wit, humor and Guillermo del Toro’s fantastic visuals, the entertaining Hellboy transcends the derivative nature of the genre.” A synopsis for Hellboy reads:
“At the end of World War II, the Nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the Allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by Allied forces and dubbed “Hellboy” (Ron Perlman). Sixty years later, Hellboy serves as an agent in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, where he, aided by Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), a merman with psychic powers, and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), a woman with pyrokinesis, protects America against dark forces.”
Was ‘Hellboy’ a Box Office Hit?
Although earning positive critical acclaim and a place inside Empire’s 2008 list of The 20 Greatest Comic Book Movies, Hellboy sadly failed to prove fruitful at the box office. Produced for a reported $60 million, the movie grossed just shy of $100 million worldwide during its 2004 theatrical run. Split between a domestic haul of $59.6 million and a further $40 million from overseas markets, Hellboy‘s global haul wasn’t even enough to place it inside 2004’s list of 50 highest-grossing titles. Still, it was enough of a fan-favorite that it did spawn a sequel with Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but a long-awaited third film has never materialized.
Hellboy will be available on Netflix on January 1, 2026. Stay tuned for more streaming stories on Collider.
