While Ghost of Yotei is very much a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, there are some key ways in which it differentiates itself, with a major one being prominent companions throughout the game. Atsu most often wanders Yotei‘s gorgeous Ezo alone, but certain circumstances provide her with a partner, who is often an active participant in combat.
[Warning: Minor spoilers for Ghost of Yotei.]
Ghost of Yotei‘s companions are not typical partners, however. You have only slight control over when one of them will join you, and the others’ appearances are entirely dictated by the game. There is also a fairly large group of players that can loosely be considered companions, which will also be covered below.
How To Get The Wolf Companion In Ghost Of Yotei
Look Out For Wolf Dens
The most prominent companion in Ghost of Yotei is a wolf that is on its own mission against the Yotei Six’s forces. In an attempt to tame Ezo, Lord Saito’s footsoldiers are quelling the wolf population, and this wolf actively recruits Atsu for help. To begin your relationship with the wolf, all you have to do is find a Wolf Den, of which there are 10 scattered throughout Yotei‘s fairly large map.
The easiest one to get to when you first start Ghost of Yotei is called Great Mountain Wolf Den, and it’s located west of Yotei’s Shadow Inn in the Yotei Grasslands. If you talk to NPCs in any region, they will eventually mention hearing or seeing wolves, and the location will be added to your map. When you arrive at a Wolf Den, you’ll start a quest in which you follow the wolf to others that are in need – you just have to eliminate the enemies and unlock any cages in the camp.
Completing one Wolf Den essentially unlocks a new skill tree that you progress through by completing subsequent Wolf Dens. There is no way to make the wolf a permanent companion, though you will eventually unlock a song that can summon the wolf to certain locations. The wolf can appear randomly in a few different situations, and completing more Wolf Dens ensures it shows up more frequently.
2 Characters Are Regular Companions In The Main Story
Oyuki & Jubei
I will avoid spoilers here, only touching on the broad strokes, because both of these companion characters are major components in Ghost of Yotei‘s story. First is Oyuki, who you will encounter in Teshio Ridge during your hunt for the Kitsune, a member of the Yotei Six. The other is Jubei, who you will meet in Ishikari Plain while breaking the yoke of the Oni.
Both of these characters operate mechanically like the wolf companion. You cannot simply choose when they accompany you; they are only present for certain missions. They essentially provide a distraction in combat, taking the heat off of Atsu and killing a few enemies, but are also helpful with stealth, assassinating enemies simultaneously with Atsu.
You Can (Kind Of) Recruit A Bear & Other NPCs
The Wolf Pack
The rest of Yotei‘s companions stretch the definition of the word even further than the ones above. Most entertaining is a bear named Shino that you can befriend. You can find him in Tokachi Range, at a location called Prospector’s Camp along the Nupur River just outside Serpent’s Pass. The map above shows where to find the Prospector’s Camp.
You’ll meet a man who keeps Shino as a pet, and a short quest will stem from chatting with him. Once you finish the quest, be sure to feed Shino fish from a nearby basket. Feed him twice, and then follow him, as he’ll lead you to a Weapon Kit called Toku’s Untamed Loyalty. I’m unsure if there is any way to trigger further interactions with Shino. A bear appeared to fight alongside the wolf while I was clearing out a camp once, but disappeared quickly, and I haven’t had another such interaction. Please let me know in the comments below if you have any more insight.
Other than that, there is a wide variety of characters who tag along on Atsu’s quest, collectively known as the Wolf Pack. These include the masters who train Atsu when you get new weapons and many of the merchants you will repeatedly see throughout Ezo. It’s tough to call these actual companions, but they can visit when you make camp, and you can make camp to explicitly summon them when they have upgrades or new items available for you.
Otherwise, Atsu and her ever-present horse journey through Ezo largely alone. Ghost of Yotei adds some companions into the mix, but they’re fleeting.
