‘Doctor Who’s Season 2 Swings Into Spring Release Date With New Posters

Some parts of the world are deep in winter’s clutches but Doctor Who Season 2, however, is looking forward towards spring. That’s when we can expect the sophomore season of Doctor Who on Disney+. Disney and BBC have officially announced that Season 2 will begin on April 12. Ncuti Gatwa returns as the Fifteenth Doctor for his second full season of Doctor Who. This will also mark the second full season of the long-running science fiction show airing on Disney+ in the U.S. The show will still air on BBC and BBC iPlayer in the UK and other international markets. Showrunner Russell T. Davies has already confirmed the return of last season’s companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), as well as an addition to the TARDIS team.

Also announced today, Alan Cumming will guest star in the season’s second episode as “Mr Ring-a-Ding, a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally.” Disney shared additional information regarding his character, saying, ” However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside — and the consequences are terrifying. Cumming is returning to the Whoniverse after previously playing King James I in the 2018 episode ‘The Witchfinders.'” Regarding the casting information Davies said:

“Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of ‘Doctor Who’ wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS.”

What Can Fans Expect From ‘Doctor Who’ Season 2?

During the trailer that dropped after the 2024 Christmas Special “Joy to the World,” fans got their first glimpse of Varada Sethu‘s Belinda Chandra — and you can see a fresh look at her character in the new poster above. Much about her has been kept under wraps, including the circumstances of her landing in the TARDIS, but one thing is clear from the trailer, at least at first: she doesn’t want to be there. Time and again, companions join the Doctor wide-eyed and ready to see the stars, and it’s often The Doctor who has to turn down a would-be companion that wants to travel with them. A new synopsis sheds some light on Belinda’s unique circumstance, revealing the Doctor can’t take her home.

“The Doctor meets Belinda Chandra and begins an epic quest to get her back to Earth. But a mysterious force is stopping their return and the time-traveling TARDIS team must face great dangers, bigger enemies and wider terrors than ever before.”

Four new writers in total were announced for the upcoming season of the long-running science fiction series. Inua Ellams, Juno Dawson, Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches), and Sharma Angel-Walfall join Davies. Not returning to write is former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, who most recently penned the Christmas special as well as the Season 1 episode “Boom.” He does know how the upcoming season ends, though, telling TV Choice Magazine that Davies sent him the script. In addition to the upcoming season, it was also announced that Belinda and the Doctor will be having two extra adventures in novel format.

Season 2 of Doctor Who arrives on Disney+ on April 12. You can catch up on Season 1 now on Disney+, along with the 60th Anniversary specials and past episodes of Doctor Who on Max. Stay with Collider for the latest updates.
