Denzel Washington will return to the big screen this August for Highest 2 Lowest, but before his next collaboration with Spike Lee hits theaters, another of his classic movies just got an exciting streaming update. Washington stars alongside Morgan Freeman and the late Andre Braugher in Glory, the 1989 Civil War thriller that tells the story of Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) and his mission to lead the United States’ first all-black fighting company. Glory is currently only streaming on MGM+, but Paramount+ has swooped in and confirmed that Glory will begin streaming on the platform on July 1. Glory grossed $26 million at the box office against an $18 million budget, and the film also earned nearly perfect scores of 95% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Glory has been largely forgotten to time — it’s certainly not the first Denzel Washington movie many would mention off the top of their head — but it will always live on as the movie that won him his first Oscar. Washington did go on to win another Academy Award for his work in Training Day, the 2001 crime thriller with Ethan Hawke that’s also coming to Paramount+ next month. Few stars can say they have two Oscars on their shelves, but even fewer can also attest that they hold as many nominations as Washington, who has earned recognition from the Academy seven more times in addition to his two wins. He was first nominated for his work on Cry Freedom (1987) before also earning nominations for Malcolm X(1992), The Hurricane (1999), Flight (2012), Fences (2016), Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017), and The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021).
