Chris Pratt’s .3 Billion Franchise Comeback Takes Down Jason Statham’s Latest Hit on Streaming

Some things will never change, like Chris Pratt being known for his role as Star Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The actor has always been multi-talented, starring alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black in the 2023 animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Equally talented, but much less prone to diversifying his portfolio (not like we’d want him to), Jason Statham is known for being quite prone to delivering on brilliant action-packed movies, and his latest offering, A Working Man, has become a massive streaming success in the States. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently streaming on Prime Video in America and both Prime and Netflix globally. A Working Man is currently streaming on both Prime Video and Amazon MGM+ in America. As of the time of writing, both maintain positions in the Top 10 of Prime Video’s charts, but Pratt’s $1.3 billion franchise has since knocked down Statham’s actioner, as it now holds a superior position.

While both movies slug it out on streaming, the pair seem to have something else in common. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned a rotten 59% from critics but holds a verified hot 95% from audiences on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The film has also grossed $1.3 billion at the global box office on a $100 million budget. A Working Man premiered earlier this year, earning a 47% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score, but turning the tide around with a verified hot 87% rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. At the box office, A Working Man wasn’t a colossal success by any means, as it grossed $88 million against a $40 million budget.

The Creative Minds Behind the Movies

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is co-directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Pierre Leduc, and Fabien Polack with all working from a script penned by Matthew Fogel. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri announced that work on a sequel to The Super Mario. Bros Movie is actively ongoing with a proposed April 3, 2026, release date being set. Pratt and Taylor-Joy are expected to return as Mario and Peach.

Statham’s A Working Man is inspired by Levon’s Trade, a book by Chuck Dixon. The adaption is written and directed by David Ayer. Statham’s Expendables co-star and legendary action star, Sylvester Stallone, also worked on the script alongside Ayer. It was a project that allowed Statham and Ayer to rekindle their working relationship, after previously working together on The Beekeeper. Statham and Stallone have a long history of working together as well, with projects such as The Expendables franchise and Homefront, under their belt. Stallone is currently keeping busy on the Paramount+ crime series, Tulsa King, which has proven to be a massive success.

You can watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie on Netflix and Prime Video. A Working Man is streaming on Prime Video or Amazon MGM+. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
