As the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot approaches, one of the show’s original villains reveals whether they would return to the series. Originally running from 1997-2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a midseason replacement on the relatively new network, The WB. The series would prove to be a cult hit and lead to a spinoff series, Angel, that ran for five seasons. The upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot on Hulu will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role alongside a new Slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
In an interview with Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Charisma Carpenter on her podcast, The Bitch Is Back, Darla actor Julie Benz reveals she would return to the series. Originally cast as Vampire Girl #1, and the first vampire seen in the show, Benz would go on to play the character for seven years between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. While no additional casting has been announced, Benz is open to returning. Check out her comment below:
I would do it again today. If they called and offered me Vampire Girl #1, today, in the reboot, I’d say ‘Hell yeah, I’ll do it.’
What This Means For The Buffy Reboot
Darla Could Add A Unique Element
Darla has one of the more interesting arcs in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe. Going from a minion of The Master in the first few episodes of season 1, she was quickly given a backstory.Darla is the vampire who sires Angelus in 1753. From there, the pair had a whirlwind romance that was largely based on violence and chaos. However, when Angel is cursed with a soul, things quickly fall apart, and they go their separate ways.
Darla ultimately has very few interactions with Buffy. In season 1, episode 7, “Angel,” their potential love triangle with Angel is cut short when he kills Darla. She later returns in Angel season 1, resurrected by Wolfram & Hart. In Angel season 2, she becomes pregnant with Angel’s son, Connor, before sacrificing herself to give birth. She would continue to return to the role as a vision and in flashbacks until Angel ended. If both Darla and Angel were to return, it could add a dramatic element that the original show cut short.
Our Take On Darla Potentially Returning
Any Old Character Is Fair Game
Gellar has stated that she wants to bring back dead Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters. With that in mind, Darla could return. While the series cannot likely bring everyone back, and certainly not all at once, Darla could be an interesting player to bring into the mix. Buffy was always searching for normalcy in her life, and coming face-to-face with a vampire that tried to kill her, and had a baby with Angel, could tighten the drama of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
