‘Bones’ Actress Admits Season 1 Schedule Left Her “Overwhelmed”

Over the course of eight seasons, the FOX procedural Bones cemented itself as a highly bingeable show with a satisfying ending. The series starred Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz as Dr. Temperance Brennan and Special Agent Seely Booth. Recently, Deschanel looked back on her somewhat grueling experience on the inaugural season of the crime drama. She recently was a guest on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast. She says that she felt “overwhelmed” due to the schedule. She explains:

“We were working insane hours, longer than just a normal series. You’re working 14- to 16-hour days, and then I had to memorize the lines. So I’d be staying up late night memorizing lines. I would joke that I would go home and just cry in a bathtub every night because I was just so overwhelmed.”

‘Bones’ Changed Over the Course of 8 Seasons, Sometimes Because of the Actors

Between character deaths, additions, and beyond the dynamics between characters can change a lot over the course of eight seasons. When it came to Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) and Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) the pair of actors took it upon themselves to help form what is usually the top favorite pairing on Bones outside of Booth and Brennan. On Deschanel’s own podcast, Boneheads, whichshe hosts with Carla Gallo, Thyne came on as a guest and explained just how Hodgins and Angela came to be.

“We can’t just sustain this where we’re just like, you’re her best friend and I’m just this guy. If we’re gonna have longevity on the show. We’ve gotta have a relationship. So we started to flirt with each other as characters early on, before it was written in… I just remember thinking strategic. It was just like, you just again, if the show is gonna what you need that, because when you guys break up, or if you guys aren’t together, you need that other couple to kind of have, like, we can cut to that. So we were like, well, we got to keep this thing kind of moving.”

He explains that from the get, “I loved any episode where I got to kiss Michaela. It was like, oh my god, this is amazing. I get to go in and have this incredible experience with a dear friend.”
